No such trans as a T-409. Is it an automatic? That would be a T-407 (code 13407) which is a Chrysler Torqueflite A727. The back up light switch is integral with the neutral safety switch.

Standard Motor Parts # NS-11

The original owners manual had T-409 written in it. *shrugs*

13409 or T-409 is a Borg Warner WG-12 Automatic used  BEFORE the 13407 was put in Travelalls and pickups.

The neutral safety switch for B-W automatics in Travelalls and pickups is steering column mounted.

It isn't on this list nor in the MT-131 index. That is where I looked it up.

The list in your link states in it's introduction that it is incomplete.The MT-131 parts catalog is for 1972 and 1973 models.If you where using the CORRECT parts catalog for a 1971 model,which is the MT-124, there would be no misinformation being spread. My information comes from the International Truck Cross-Reference of Major Units 1008519R1 Re-issued 1-79,which covers all major components listed in the MT-103 through MT-140 parts catalogs.

Brake light is out! Thanks fellas. I started looking into the reverse light switch yesterday. I found a "male" electrical connection on the right side of the bell housing on the tranny. There was a "female" wire connector dangling there coming from a relay like box/switch on the driver side. I plugged it in but got nothing. I will thoroughly clean the connectors with contact cleaner and try again. I reckon I am heading down the right track.

I went and picked up a couple of ring gaskets from NAPA too. I still think there is a "flanged" gasket in there too, I will break everything loose and find out.

Well, I guess I took over this thread…..sorry.

Buuuuuuut, I have good news;

My back up light works! Hooray!! It was an uplugged switch at the base of the steering column.

I replaced the Manifold to exhaust pipe flange gaskets and donuts. (NAPA is my new best friend)

I have found however, that rear seal is one leaking beeeeotch. Valve cover gaskets need to be replaced as well.  Now if I could find that leaking valve/o-ring in the fuel tank switch…………..
