Hello all,

I was searching thru some older postings and ran across King3hart's R-110 resto photos.  I noticed that on some of the pictures there was some kind of silver "paint" used. I was curious to know what that was. It didn't seem to be applied to everything, just the portions that were either extremely rusted. Here is a link to one of the pictures.

Also if anyone knows, Is it imperitave to remove all the paint which is left on surfaces which are in good shape prior to priming or should it be taken down to bare metal?  Im ready to start body work on my S-110 and want to make sure I don't run into any problems down the road due to improper body prep. Thank you very much in advance.

     Hi Dale,

I think that is part of the POR-15 process King3hart shows elsewhere in his photo album (I believe I've spent more time looking at his resto. pictures than at my own truck Laughing):

I haven't gotten to the point of working on the body of mine yet but I'm sure others will chime in with responses to your paint/bare metal question.

Hey Dale, i think like a lot of things on these trucks, it kind of depends on how you want to use the truck and what your vision of it is. for a 100 pt. concours restoration, you would absolutely want to take it all the way to bare metal. for a quick and dirty paint job on a daily driver, if the old paint is tight and not flaking or peeling, you could give it a light sanding or go over it with scotch brite pads and spray and pray.

kind of depends on your tolerance for imperfections. IMHO…keep in mind, i've never painted a vehicle in my life, so my advice should be taken with a grain of salt…however i've watched a heck of a lot of car restoration tv! lol

if its for your daily driver or 20 footer…….if the paint as mentioned is in not bad shape and all you have to deal with is sratches…….cut it down with 180 and then water sand it with 400……then your good for paint, or primer and paint. if you have very small imperfections….all you may need is a primer surfacer to correct them

If you want to take it down to bare metal…..you will need to apply a sealer before priming and painting to insure that the rust doesnt come back with in a few months, then prime and paint.

Dont take life too serious.... you wont make it out aliveLaughing

I always use epoxy primer on bare metal..There are various colours available for those who want to enjoy/drive their vehicle until they are ready to paint. You don't need much paint as these primers cover well.

Even if you don't take it down to bare metal you may want to seal it.  Talk to whomever you get the paint from whether their paint is compatible with what is probably on there.  You don't want to paint it one day and the next day you have bubbles everywhere and have to start over.  Its enough to make you cry on the spot!

Radridesbydan, you mentioned a sealer on the bare metal before primer. Does the epoxy primer have a sealant in it or am I going to need a "sealer".
Thank you
Dale
