so i see some people replace the 80/800 axles with later scout II axles. is there anything necessarily wrong with the 80/800 axles? i assume the dana 44's are better supported in the aftermarket…

i'm not looking to do any serious off roading or super huge tires…i'm thinking like a two inch lift and 265/75-R16 all season tires…if the little 152 will twist them hard enough! lol

just bench racing…

The Dana 27 axles are weak, but if you have a lite right foot you'll be OK. Otherwise swap in a Dana 30 up front and a 44 outback. 2" lift will be just about right. Don't know what those tire size measures out to in diameter, but 31x10.50x15 fit and look 'just right'. You can make a closed knuckle 30 drum brake into a disc brake set-up. I'm looking for some 44's to put under the blue Scout 80.

BTW, here is a little scout for-ya. Fasten your seatbelt.

thanks Dan! i know where i can pick up a scout II pretty reasonable. my fear is, i'll get the bug to fix it rather than harvest the axles! lol

as for the drag racing scout, that's weird and wonderful! puts me in mind of what chuck yeager said about the F-4 Phantom; it proves that if you put a big enough engine behind it, even a brick will fly! lol

ps: ever heard of someone putting later model jeep cherokee/wagoneer axles under a scout 80? aren't they dana 44's?

Later Jeeps/Waggys are driver side drop. Early Waggys are passenger side drop 44's, 6 lug. Earlier Chevvys are already 'spring over' for your lift. But you have to cut down one side of front tubes for width issues.

So, get the S II for axles. Park it outback, outta sight. If you do, I'll lite a candle for-ya. OR, another route some fellows do is swap an 80/800 body on a S II frame/drive train. Sell the rest but keep the 80 frame.

John, did you ever find a set of Scout II axles? I have a matching set not mounted to anything, if you want. I don't need them, if you want them, just drop me a line. The brake section will need rebuilt, but I think that would be cheaper than buying a Scout II. I think. Send me a PM if you want pictures by email.     Bill
