GET A LITTLE EXTRA CAB IN YOU L TRUCK Projects Truck Talk
Topic RSS
The cab is a 1950 L 112 I think if I'm wrong someone will correct me.
The cab that we are using for the donor is an R (not sure of the year) but it was beat up bad ,if you look close in the pics you will see some of the damage .
So we didn't feel bad for cutting it up for the build . We are going to add 24" to the back of the L cab , and thats about all thats any good on the R cab .
We got cutting on the R cab after I got the felt marker out and maked the cut lines out and many hours of "this will work, no it won't "!
I finally got the lines that would work and Dad went to it with the grinder and with some help from me we cut the R down .
WE then cut the back out of the L cab , we cut long so we had extra to work with ,so the L cab is cut and the R is cut and now they are set together and mocked up I'll get Dad to post the pics soon.

For those of you who don't know me I am computer illiterate and don't have the want to learn ,so Dad is helping with the build so I'll get him to post some pics for all of you in Binder land . And I'll do the play by play commentary . LOL
So please be patient and when Dad finds his way back from where ever he went i'll get him to post the pics.

OfflineWhat is this??? I let the boy have 2 days to himself, and he is already lost!
So the truth finally comes out, and I thought it was a learning disability! Not a learning short fall!
OK, you guys want to see meatball surgery A LA MASH!
Let's all keep in mind this all started innocently enough with Lloyd mentioning that he would like to get a sleeper cab truck to have the extra space. I countered with the bluesky about an extended cab L pickup, and we're off! This is the cab Lloyd brought. It was due for some refresh, and had obvious signs of a previous splash of bondo, but in nice enough shape after all.\

Note the specially made cab cart. I got the '53, R-112 in very rough shape for a reasonable price. It was solid, but would never be a pickup cab again. Deeper inspection of the rest of the truck showed that it was the right decision. The rear portion of the cab, the doors below the window line, and the floor were in great shape except for a few dents, and the normal cab corner tin worm visit.
The cab had been lifted, frame and all by a chain thru the doors at one time, which left some superficial scars, but the worst damage is above the windshield where they lifted it with a cat, or loader. This could have been recovered if necessary, but it would test my skill, and I did not need another untitled truck.
Fast forward to this week.
Some preliminary dissassembly was done a while back, removing doors, and firewall. Note the specially made cab cart #2! It is so much easier to handle these by yourself, if they can not fall from a gurney, or off barrels. The shroud was needed to protect the innocent cab from knowing what was in it's future.
I cut some further off the front of the floor, and as you can see, stripped all of the removable items from the doors. A lot of the wrinkles came out once we cut the windshield frame off.
Lots of room here now, but more has to go.
Cutting lines. Measure each day, all summer, cut once!!!!
Hyde what is that in your hand?!

And he said I cut the truck cabs up!
Next victim please!
Before every one gets excited and worried about how the cuts don't match, this is cut as a preliminary, without much care given to eventual fit. Lots has been left behind to grab later, while saving the whole rear cab section to help replace rougher rusted out window frames in future cab restorations.
Pretty color.
Then it can all be slid together for some very general look-see.
Still way more room here than most extended cabs, but when all trimmed up, it will have about 24" of extension.
That's it for tonight. More soon. I have not gone missing, only been doing Government chores that kept me away from the insanity at Hyde's Garage! One needs recovery time now and then!
That is Back Alley Customs. Yes, Hyde has yet to come out of the alley! Too busy ripping and cutting!

OfflineSJ, that yellow unit was treated to the same cat, or loader that the R cab was, but the operator was not finished his first coffee or something! Man folks can get pretty mean with an old piece of junque!
It used to be a 66 1200 4x4.
Lloyd, do you want me to open the private album for public viewing?

OfflineMike, it is your album. If you want to open it for public that is fine with me. I thought it was interesting what you found in my cab corner. Might also have to put any embarrassing photos in a private album!

I think most will find it very interesting to see the progression.

OfflineThere is a fair challenge finding a beginning point to measure each cab from, as there are almost no straight lines, or intersecting lines in this body style. It is a bit like running a base line while surveying land. The project is actually simple as dirt once you get the orientation right, but for that you must get the cab parts in close proximity.
Lloyd, it may be my album, but it is your truck, and Hyde's build. I will open the album shortly, and here is the link.

Embarassing photos make a build interesting! LOL! The shotgun shell was well past doing any harm to anyone, but had not been fired. It is one of the paper jacketed ones, so was likely there since the early 60s. I don't censor!

OfflineThere used to be a green K/KB truck running around this part of the high desert that had major surgery like that. Turned it into an extended cab. Good work and all, but it had a 50' paint job on it. Couldn't tell where any cut lines/welds etc. mated up. Nice looking rig if you ignored the paint job.
That picture of the 'R' on skates sneaking up on the shrouded 'L' borders on truck porn.
Ya sick , but any way !
Glad I read the disclamer ! That would have cost me my computer!

OfflineDan, there was some small amount of discussion surrounding sneaking up on the shroud covered…. But it really had nothing to do with Porn! For the sake of harmony and PC in the public forum, I will not elaborate, but I am certain you have an idea! I think Jimbo got close to describing it as the local brothers handshake!
LOL!
SJ, I believe what is being called stress cuts are where the lines on the round corners of the cab roof are to be cut. These are necessary to allow the forward corners to spread to the same width as the back of the original cab. There are a similar pair needed on the floor. If you don't make those cuts, the cab will wrinkle, or fold or simply refuse to change shape! The IH is a stubborn truck at times!
Dean, take notes, as your cab is virtually the same. We can make all the mistakes, but we will not be showing you those, until it is done. Again, as was mentioned before, the end result is going to be a bit of a suprise, even for Lloyd!

OfflineIn this case, just the opposite. The 6th and 7th pics I posted here show lines drawn on the cab corners. When we go to spread the front of the cab's drip rails out to meet the original cab width, these cuts will allow the door frames to come out from the cab, widening the front area. Same with the floor on each side.
I will certainly be taking pics as we do that part, so you can see how.
