Think i solved my starter problem. Ive been tripping over a 1932 int engine(waukisha), low and behold it has a delco-remy starter. When delco-remy merged in late 1926,they went to the one piece steel starter housing doing away with the pot metal end cap, both 4.5 inch od, 6 inches long.Swapped housings, kept armature. Just had to redrill the location of the end bolts holes in the cap. Looks good sitting on the bench. cant wait to try it!

I saw the pics, not bad for being out in the snow. When did Lycoming stop making engines for IH? Im still trying to find valve covers. Lycoming had a perimeter bolt (screw) pattern, the waukisha has a center bolt. I guess ill have to find another donar :)

Thanks Bill

Has anyone been able to crossover the 1926 ih distributor cap to anything or is it its own animal? Looks familiar in size to one i have seen before…tractor..farm equipment ?.. but just cant seem to match it. It has the Lycoming 4 banger in it. Thanks!

starter rebuilt worked out great! Carb has a crack in it,guess its common with the Zenith T4xf. Low compression in rear cylinder head removal inevitable ,and still have to locate valve covers. Does anyone know if there were issues with the oil pumps like there were with the starter end plates?  thanks

Have a read of this topic it is all about the Lycoming Oil pump problems, once you have finished reading it you need to contact JD (jackiedog29) who has got the adaptors made up to near completion.

http://oldihc.org/truck-talk/p…..h-lycoming

Its only 14 pages long

Where abouts is the carby cracked as i may have some spare bits. Side covers would be easy to get made up. need to check my spare engines to see if any spares.

I read the pages on the Lycoming oil pumps…WOW! The 14 pages read fast, its unbelievable how much time, effort and research went into finding and designing an after market pump. With all the info, ill put checking it for stress cracks on my todo list.

The carb was cracked on the venturi tube below where it bolts to the intake down to where it bolts to the base. i found one on Ebay and after a couple different counterbids i got it for a good price, seems like it was a odd carb and wasnt used for more then a few years and most cracked in the same spots, must be the drastic temp changes we have here over 80 years :)  Right now everything is on hold, broke my right wrist and sprained my left after a spill at work..i got all these things i could tinker with but its all i can do to wipe my own….nose! …Thanks alot

Bill,

You do not need to worry about oil pump problems as long as it is not plugged with sludge!

Your Model "S" has the KB Lycoming engine. It uses a plunger type pump that has a cast iron body. Note that your dash guage is only numbered to 4psi. This pumps only purpose is to pump oil up to fill the connecting rod dipper troughs.

The CT and KB engines share about 3 things

1. both were made by Lycoming

2. both have 4 cylinders

3. the oil pan bolts are the same, maybe!

Other than that the 2 engines are as different as night and day!

The carburetors crack because the pot metal venturi swells up. Contact Lehman who has the SD, he made a new venturi for his.

Wish you a fast recovery from your mishap!

Bill

Note to Trevor

Before going shooting mouth off about 4 cylinder Lycoming engines REMEMBER the KB.

?? Why do i always think only about the CT.

hey all..,had to pull the head on my 26 Lycoming, didnt come off as smooth as i would have hoped, managed to find an outfit on the west coast with a good used one. Ive heard you can coat them with shalack and reuse them, has anyone heard of or come up with another way to secure a seal on the head? I also noticed when pulling the valves that the 2 center valves are  made heavier with a flat top insted of a slight dome, and also have a shorter base between the keeper and the lifter. Can anyone enlighten me on the reason for this? Thanks for the help  Bill

Bill, Do you mean coating the head gasket with shellac ??  Olson gaskets should have a new head gasket for you

http://www.olsonsgaskets.com/P…..ducts.aspx

The odd valves are probably something someone put in because they couldn't find the original valves.  I have found odd valves in engines before.      Jim

Jim, just talked to them at Olson, they said it was an nos gasket. Might be banged up from being on the shelf, and if i had  any concerns they would send another one and to send this on back, thanks Bill

My son and i just got done pulling pistons and vavles. Found one connecting rod cap bolt broke i valve spring broke, and lof course two odd valves that at closer inspection look to have been longer and were cut down and a new keeper groove machined in. Question, are any valve parts and rings (3.5 inch bore), rod bolt, still available for this KB Lycoming? Seems the CT parts are easier to come by. Is there also somewhere i can get all the engine specs, torque, clearances , general info for this unit? Thanks Bill

Bill,    Pardon the brevity of the response. My computer died and I’m on a new one. Everything is different.

I don’t know about specs for the Lycoming but Model  A Ford specs are in Macs Antique auto  free catalog. Piston, valve, and crankshaft clearances and torques are listed in the catalog and should be close enough. Call 800.777.0948 ask for free catalog. They will ask what car you have .. say '30 pickup truck.

Parts like valves or valve springs:        Try  Egge machine, or  Kanter,  or sivalves.com

http://www.sivalves.com/

Rings from Otto gas engine works.  Check pistons for over size markings.  Call Dave  410.398.7340 and give him the size.

Jim
