LIL'Red

Howdy to everyone out there!

My girlfriend was on craigslist and found this old truck. She turn to me and said " hey take a look this cool ol' truck. It was a 1952 IH L-170 truck with a dump bed. I then called the number and went to pick it up. The farmer only wanted $700 for it as long as I agreed to fix it up and keep it. If not he wanted to sell it to someone else. LaughingHow could I reuse? I put a battery on it and had it running in about 30 mins. I drove the damn thing home!!!! We live by Stockon Lake in Missouri and parts aren't easy to find, so If y'all have ideas- let me know. I'm looking forward to running through the truck.

Any way- glad to be onboard

Kind Regards,

Does this truck look all original? I really don't know much about it. Is it worth putting money into? I want to use it to tear down old barns and buildings. I think it would look pretty neat to show up in an old truck and haul off old stuff. All ideas are encouraged and welcome. It runs and drives but needs some work. Brakes, King Pins, gasket set (valve cover, side, oil pan all look to be leaking) I've rebuild the master cylinder and carb. Tuned it up- new distributor cap, rotor, wires, plugs. RUNS SMOOTH!!!!The pto dump bed works great and the truck is rated for haul 19,000 lbs. Does that sound right to everyone. (seems real high to me) Some of the parts I think I need are just damn expensive. The wheel bearings seals alone are $80.00 each! (part#97737HA or the new part# 97737HX) If anyone can help point me in the right direction it's gotta be this site. So I hope y'all reply and giveme a pointer or two.

Awesome find there!    Welcome aboard. I'm not an 'L' expert, but they are popular here and many will be able to help you. The box looks 70ish, but it fits and looks great.

Just an observation, but those horizontal strips on the grill and leading edge of the hood Might be either Chrome or Stainless steel. If you carefully pull off the one on the nose you should be able to tell on the back. Check out the first post in the LRS Forum, there should be a Pinned parts thread.  Lots of LRS owners on here.

welcome!

looks pretty original to me…in that condition, makes me wonder if it's an old fire truck…

a 170 is a pretty heavy truck, so that weight rating is probably right…these old binders will haul quite a load!

keep us posted.

The truck looks great and you drove it home for $700., sounds like a crime scene to me! ..I would not be too concerned about the price of wheel seals,,you'll likely only ever replace them once however you might want to shop around as that does seem a bit rich,,,That paint looks like it would shine with a bit of buffing. For peace of mind I would change all engine, coolant, transmission, rearend and brake fluids immediately.

Have fun with your new toy

Nice find!

Yeah- parts can be a bear to find, but the good news is most of the things you need are fairly generic and easily available form parts stores IF you find one with some older guys that aren't afraid to look in a book!

I've gotten real tired of going in and having the register monkey tell me "we don't got it" after about 20 seconds of tickety-tickety on the computer. (At another place they scatter like roaches when the light comes on every time they see me coming! Laughing) I've learned to look up things myself off their website and take in a printout of the page.

Good luck and keep us posted on the progress- lots of great advice here for the asking.

Thanks, y'all….I think this will be fun to not the cobwebs out of this ol' truck. You are right about the young buck on the computer. I've been going to a Carquest store that's been around since 1946 and all the (and I say) MEN that work there know what the hell their talkin' about. They know how to use a book! If they say it will work it will!! I love that about these guy's. It's a true (been there done that) group of men. Family owned and operated!! You just don't find that anymore. I do like Napa, but the nearest one is 2 or more hours away. I know that's hard to believe but, it true. I'll keep you updated on the project on the L-series forum. Look for the 1952 dump truck. That's me.

Once again Thanks Gentlemen,

Kind Regards-
