Hello!

I just bought an IH S110 from my neighbor. She and her family had owned this truck since it was new (i believe).

She was a very elderly woman and was fuzzy on all the details. The truck is in decently solid shape, motor and trans are there. It just needs several years of some TLC.

I was wondering if any of you guys could tell me a little about what I have and some pointers on  this specific truck.

My main  question is how to determine what year the truck is. The elderly lady wasn't exactly sure, she thought early 50's but the registration in the glove box says 41. However when I look at all the pictures online it doesn't appear to be as old as a 41, it looks alot like a 53-54 ish according to the pics. Is there a way to know for sure. I have the serial and ID numbers.

Thanks!

Chassis serial number will give you a good yr range(go to the wiscon hist soc page, link is located on rt side of this page)  Does it have two rear windows or single, two indicates 50-52(some 53's I have heard) single indicates 53-?.  grill is also an indicator. Unless it has a pointed nose, it is probably a 50's truck.

Others will chime in.

John,

If you really look at that truck there are few things lacking. No knobs on the window cranks, knobs on the dash don't match and aren't original, looks like old rubbers in the door windows, different air cleaner, missing rubbers on the wing windows, is that a paint sag around the radio delete plate or a reflection and the wipers are going in the same direction(like my Missouri built truck)Wink. For the price this truck is going for it should be in mint condition. Just makes me wonder if it has the same old brittle wire? Other than that it looks good. I just have to remember mine looked pretty good when I got it too for $2100 and what I have found wrong "so far". Boy, I'm just full of bad news.

Way to rain on my parade Kris! Lol seriously, u make a good point about having someone else look at a truck before you buy. Sometimes love is blind…

Thanks John,

I may send you some more to upload if that is ok. Having seen it now, what year do you think it is? can you tell me anything about this particular truck that would help me in the restoration process?

Thanks again!

not a problem!

i'd definitely say '56 or '57, the only two years the "S" series was made. could potentially be titled as a '55 or '58 as back in the day, vehicles were sometimes titled by the year sold as opposed to the date of manufacture.

based on the wheels, i'd say it's a 100 or 110; both are 1/2 ton, with the 110 having slightly heavier springs. if there's anything left of the glove box liner, you might try feeling around on top for the line setting ticket; this is essentially the "birth certificate" for an IH truck. it gives a wealth of info on what parts went into your truck. unfortunately they don't often survive. the wisconsin historical society can provide them, but they are not always available for trucks made prior to the '60's. the LST for was not available for my '56 according to super scout specialists. i keep meaning to contact the WHS directly to see if they have any better luck.

others with more knowledge will weigh in.

I think I may have recently been given one of these as well.  The body is a bit rough, but the 2 year only part and being a short box certainly interests me.  What are a few more things to look at on these models- my expertise is on the d line trucks of the 70's, but I would love to build a nice little driver for my wife out of this one.

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK the S is very similar to the L & R differing mostly from the firewall forward; all three used the comfo-vision cab, which was used by IH and other manufacturers on some heavy trucks up to the late sixties.

i think the S series was the first series to offer 12v as an option, which became standard on the A series in late 57 or early 58. the S first offered an enclosed steering column for the three speed shifter.

others with more knowledge will weigh in…

ps: the S may have been the first series to offer 4x4 as a standard option as opposed to a special order…but i'm not 100% sure on that…

The S models were built starting in the last quarter of 1955 through early 1957.  If your VIN plate is missing, check the front of the frame on the driver side for the VIN stamping.

Feel around above the glove box to see if the original line set ticket is still there.  When I bought my S-140 in 2007, I was pleasantly surprised to find the ticket still there after 50 years.

The good news is the rear cab corner doesn't look to be all rotted out like most. MM

Thanks for all of the help!

Yeah there isn't alot of rust anywhere except in the bed.

I took the glove box out and found the LST, it was actually still there. The bad thing is, is that it is almost completely unreadable, I guess due to 50+ years of being there.

I did find the vin # on the frame. How do I use it to tell the exact year?

I am having the hardest time getting a title for it. I live in AZ and appearently it is an act of congress to get a title on something this old. The lady I got the truck from is very elderly and it was titled in her fathers name, who has been deceased for years. So I am having to jump through several hoops to make it happen. Now they want me to bring it in for a level 2 inspection. So we'll see.

I haven't tried the above suggestions, and,…even though they would work,…here's what I did:

I found an old rusted remain of a pre 40 something along a river's edge. i saw two numbers–the plate on the door, and the engine. I used a felt pen to highlight the stamped steel and then photo'ed it. I went to my computer and sought out vid pre-40 and just by luck, plymouth showed up for 39 and lo and behold I found my vid to fall inbetween a range of numbers displayed. turns out to be ph plymouth and even the engine number was appropriate. all this in a ten minute–albeit very lucky—search. So,…it can be done!smile
