Hi Folks,

For those of you that have either purchased something that was a significant distance away and/or was too big to move with a regular car trailer (like a U-haul or similar), what did you do?

I purchased a 1962 AMC-164 IH truck (15 ft wheelbase, 20+ ft. overall length) and I'm trying to find the "best" (least expensive, but still safe) way to get it home.

I've contacted regular tow companies and the quotes vary along with the method of transport.

Anyone have any ideas about contacting shipping brokers or vehicle transport companies?

Currently the truck is about 50 miles north of Sacramento, CA and I'm trying to get it to Campbell which is near San Jose.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts and suggestions.

Chris

I've used auto transport brokers 3 times to move my trucks.   If you do a google search on 'auto transport' you will get pages of results.  Most companies will have on-line quote systems for free quotes.  Beware that even though you may type in exactly what vehicle you have, their quote systems may be based on some 'standard' car (like a Honda Accord) and anything bigger will be an upcharge.  They will also charge more if your vehicle is inoperable – they must start, run, stop and steer on their own.

Most brokers are exactly that – they just broker the transaction with independent truckers and take a fee markup.  Your best bet might be to find a local trucking firm that can do the actual haul.

Thanks, I did exactly what you recommended and I'm waiting for quotes… :)

I went to a local equipment rental place and they had 20ft equipment trailers for rent, cost me 90 bucks for the day and was a perfect fir for my 47 k5.

You can put in a bid on http://www.ship.com   You will get bids to move the truck from multiple people/shippers.  I believe they are all required to be insured and such.  It's free to get bids so it's worth a look.

I posted a request on http://www.uship.com and I've received two offers, one for $697 plus a $30 auction fee (auction? it was a classified ad) and one for the max that I posted $800 and to do it in 2 weeks.

Another website, http://www.state2stateautotransport.com/, has quoted $325.

What questions should I be asking these guys so that I don't get messed with or worse?

I rented a 18FT tandem trailer for moving my R-185, and pulled with my 94 Chev diesel 3/4 ton. I was 300 miles thru mountains, and aside from being very careful with hills, I had no great issue. The R-164 weighs about 7000lb bare frame, so yours should be just over that I expect. The R-185 was just over 8000lb., and had a built in sleeper cab. See pic in my sig box. Good luck.

One thing you can do is Google the company and see what results you get, like complaints.

I used "state 2 state auto transport" just to see and got quite a few, even with the BBB which was a high rating.

Their quote sounds reasonable IMO.

you know, i love and use ratings but sometimes they just confuse the heck out of me; i'll see a product with like three out of five stars and lots of good ratings, and then a few who report a horrible experience. i'm like, what the heck happened there?! i think it's like my mom used to say, "some people would complain if they were hung with a new rope!" lol

My Mother used to say, "I"ll beat you within an inch of your life".  She did, and we went to foster care and she was put into "safe keeping".  ;-}>

I got my truck today and everything was OK. I used uShip.com and found a nice couple that moves vintage vehicle around. They even had a second C.O.E. on their trailer when they delivered mine.
New pictures to follow! laugh

Could you PM me, got something to try to get to Southern California, and want to explore that possibility. Thanks
