I have two tailgates, one has International stamped into the outer panel, it fits in the c pickup, but someone said it is a D tailgate. Anyone know for sure? I'm not sure how to post pics or I'd post them both here.

The Model C tailgate is a single panel and does not have International stamped on it. The Model D does has the triple diamond logo stamped on it. They are hard to find!

The C series seems to be the same as the D without the outer skin. Not sure about the single rod for hinge bolt.

ok,thanks, that clears things up. I have a D series pickup in the junk pile but the tailgate is missing, but the stamped tailgate I have does not fit it, did IH use more than one typ of box? I guess it is also possible that the truck has the wrong box.

i have photos of  the 37/38 d model box which is different than the 39/40 d box.

reason being is they changed the box style is 39 and they carried the box from the 39 d series clear over into the k/kb series which ran up to 1949.

i also have photos of the c model box which is different than the 37/38 d box although there similar to one another.

with the major differance i can see being the stake pockets.

i will post photos later this after noon as i have to leave as week speak for a doctor apt with my pulmonologist.

We have a 1940 D-2 and the tailgate has "international" stamped in the gate, BUT………..have been told, and at this point, believe that in fact ours is not original. Was told that an original would have the three diamonds stamped in it, as Dave stated. Sorry can not help on the "c" series, but stick around, others with more knowledge than I, will address your concerns.

Depending on when and where the D-2 was made . Canadian D-2 did not receive the rib side box until mid 1940.The INTERNATIONAL Stamped tailgate is correct for U.S. 1940 D-2

first i am asking a question here.

which is is the tailgate on this green and black 39/40 d series truck d15h posted the factory correct tailgate for a 1939/1940 d series?

reason i am asking is i was under the understanding that the 39/40 d model had the same tailgate that was used on the k/kb 1 thru 3 with the ihc ribbed side box that was also used on the 39/40 d series.

so i am just trying to get thing straight to what is right and what is not.

next as for the c verses d tailgate of what i have personally seen is that the 37/38 d model tailgate has the triple diamond emblem with the word international stamped into the tailgate.

the 37/38 d model tailgate has 3 lower hinges that function individually of one anther.

so does the c model model yet how ever the hinges on the c operate with a lower rod that connects all three hinges together so they act as one.

also the center hinge on the c series runs the full length top to bottom of the tailgate as were on the 37/38 d model the hinge is only attached to the lower tube of the tailgate.

next you can see the c 37/38 and 39/40 tailgate's and compare them based on the photos d15h has already posted

with this all said i have attached 3 photos 2 are of c model beds and the 3rd is of a 37/38 bed.

reason for the photos is to show the beds are different

the difference in the 37/38 and the c series bed are the stakes pockets.

as the 37/38 d series has tear dropped style stake pockets as were the c bed has straight pockets.

you can see the difference buy comparing the photos as well as the 37/38 d model which is the creme and green truck i posted and the stake pocket is circled in read so you can see the difference.

c model bed image 1

c bed image 2.

although the bed on this truck is a c model bed the truck its self is a chey 1942 to 47 and more commonly know as a wuurlitzer jute box truck as the grill resembles a 40s wurlitzer jute box.

this last truck is a 37/38 d series

lastly hope this helps out.

The first picture is the original tailgate on my 1935 C-1. The second is the replacement which I made.

The green truck is a 1940 D-3 with a 1938 D-2 bed on it . The tailgate is original for the 1938 bed.

The gray truck is a1940 D15H with a KB-3 bed on it. The tailgate is one that I built using the D-3 tailgate as a pattern knowing that this is not correct for this bed. I made a mold for the triple diamond logo and cast it from liquid urethane.
