i drooped out the gas tank today on my 71 pickup. Still had about 3 gallons of gas in it after 4 years!! figured that would have been gone with the Tucson heat. So, i got it down, i know to clean it, thinkin i am going to go with the muratic acid tips i found from an earlier post. My questions is…  Any other tips before i put it back up??  Thanks in advance!!

Some radiator shops will clean the tank and line it for about $100.(Just a thought)

A couple of handfuls of nuts and bolts, combined with a gallon of bio-diesel, and shake it real good. This is probably the best pre-cleaner you can get. Then, if there's still any rust left, hit it with acid. I prefer phosphoric acid, a little milder than muriatic and has the benefit of leaving a protective layer when washed out.

If it has no leaks after that treatment just throw in a quart of 2 component polyurethane paint and slosh it around to cover the whole inside.

The cleaning tips are a good place to go, give the sending unit a real good look and replace the o ring under it you might wnat to test the sending unit while you have it out to make sure it is worth re-installing.

If this is a driver's side tank- fender fill- you want to try to find the filler neck from a 72 to 75 pick-up or either side from a travelette, or travelaall.  The later ones were steel and didnt spilt from the fuel nozzle resting against them while filling.  the 71 and older had a formed Non-plied rubber neck which was a bad idea.

If you don't have an inline filter between your fuel pump and the carb- add one.  There may be grit trapped in the lines between the tank and carb.

way to be proactive- gas tank problems are a real drag.
