OfflineHello everybody, I'm new here, and unfamiliar with the many models of IH trucks, so Im hoping this is in the right place. I'm looking forward to meeting you all! now that the formalities are past, I have a few questions for you guys.
I have my eye on a IH 1310. It last ran in 2003, has decent paint, good interior, a minor mouse problem, 3 speed transmission, and what appears to be a big block V8. The engine has a holley double barrel carb on it, alternator on the right hand side, starter on the right, oil filter on the left. The engine is orange, and that makes me think it is not original. I dont know much about engines past 2 cylinders, so please excuse my incompetence with terminology. I would like to know as much as there is to know about this truck, so if anyone knows anything please speak up! I will post pics as soon as I get them off my phone and see if photobucket works here.
Thanks everyone!!

Offlinewelcome Tyler!
so far, what you describe sounds right…the "orange" engine could be faded IH red or have been repainted incorrectly…
be careful…one IH can turn into a "bunch"! lol

Ya I kinda already know that.. between my dad and I we own 13 Cub Cadet Garden tractors. I only started collecting just over 2 years ago. I have what I beleive to be the second largest IH Cub Cadet collection in western Canada. its called yellow fever an I have it bad!!!
Im in the process of uploading my pics to photobucket, so they will be here shortly. Thanks for the warm welcome!
Don't worry about the yellow fever ,if you leave them out in the sun they will ripen!! LOL

OnlineThat orange tells me it's a factory Reman.,sold 100's of them. No idea what that is with the Mopar on it but it is definitely an IH engine.
To ID the engine…on the front right (pass) side of the block a bit below where the head mates there's a cast boss/tang about 3"L x 1"H that should have the engine size and possibly the eng. serial number stamped in it. They weren't alway's very deep and may be filled with paint and/or crud so you may need to clean it up to read.
If it is an IH reman. and was bored out the size should also be stamped there too.
While I'm thinking of it,do you have a Line Setting Ticket for the truck? maybe the PO gave you a copy?
If you don't know what it is,this link will give a basic explanation;
http://oldihc.org/line-setting-tickets
You could also take a look and see if the original (with some luck) is still in the truck. Open the glovebox and find the spring clips on each side, press them in and flip the box downward. If you find a white piece of paper with a list of numbers and stuff taped on it,that's it.

OfflineFactory displacement was 304 as indicated by HP ratings on the data plate. Where it is a remanufactured engine, who knows what it is…VERY unlikely it is a 392 as it has a 2BBL still.
Rear-end is an RA15. Gear ratio is probably 4.30 or 4.88.
It's got a 71 grille on it – my favorite of the 69-75 trucks I think.
Good luck with it. How much are they asking?

OfflineWow, thanks for all the info guys!! I will have to go look for that ID casting on the engine. It is 8 miles away so I won't be going up every rime I have a question, especially with harvest going on. I will look for that sheet, haven't talked to the owner in a while, so I do not have that sheet from him. He has no asking price at the moment, just said he wants it out of there, and wants to make a deal.
Questions: is there a way to make this engine oporate with a 4 barrel carb? I understand the intake manifold will have to be changed, is this changeover possible? Parts available? I can do any plumbing, mechanical linkages and electrical work, I'm pretty good at that.
Next question: is it a one ton or a HD 3/4 ton?
Thanks for all the help :)

Offlineihonlynorth.com and suprescoutspecialists.com carry aluminum 4bbl intakes for the SV engines…not cheap, but they are nice…

Offline1310 is an IH "One Ton" truck, but I'm sure it has carried more in its day.
IH produced two different 4-barrel intake manifolds for the 345 & 392 engines: spreadbore and squarebore.
IH did NOT produce a 4-barrel intake manifold for the 266 & 304 engines.
Aftermarket aluminum 4 barrel manifolds are available from IH Only North, as mentioned. They make them for the 266-304 and for the 345-392. About $600 or so each. Carb not included. They are also nice manifolds to use for TBI fuel injection. Check their web-site.

OfflineWelcome to the site. Hope you are able to get the truck.
Before making any big plans to swap out the 2bbl carb I would get it going and see how you like it….if you are fine with it as is it not only will be more original…but will be a lot cheaper and easier.
On my two '72 Travelalls a copy of the Line set ticket was taped to the back of the glovebox….it is worth a look to see if yours has one there as well. A '70 1210 I parted out did not though, so I'm not sure when they started or if they did it to everything once they did start.

Offer to haul it off – it has worked for me before.
You will not like how a 304 will run with a 4BBL – simply too much carburetor. In fact, I have seen guys work over 2BBLs and put them on 392 because they got sick of paying for fuel. A 304 is a fine engine for a truck, and has plenty of grunt to get the job done. With a fine tuned 2BBL, and depending on your gearing, you should be able to get 15mpg out of that 304

OfflineFour Paws, i have heard that the SV engines are easy to over carburate but what about using a small four barrel like a 390 cfm holley?

OnlineSeems like an expensive proposition to gain a little performance. 600+ for a manifold then find a carb. New Holley 4150's start at around $350. Then to pay for the increase in gas burned…

OfflineA year ago I bought a 65 D1200 just north of Denver Co.. When I got her home to southeast Penna. I soon found out the carb. was way big for a 304. After checking the list number, the carb. ID as a 500 cfm 2 barrel. At that time I used Holley's replacement carb.sizing program only to find out a 350 cfm carb. (the smallest replacement carb. they sell) was still abit over sized. I bought a 350 carb and it's all a stock 304 IHC engine needs or wants.
I understand IHC sv engines this way. They are work engines, built heavy and rev up slow. Dumping more gas in the top with out other up grades will not change this fact.
I would say the only thing the 4 barrel will give you more of is time spent filling the gas tank.
Just what happen in my neck of the woods. Please do as you please, and welcome to the site.

OfflineWow, lots of great info guys!! The reason I was curious about a four barrel, was my dad and I had theorized that a four barrel with smaller primary's would get better fuel economy and better get up and go. I am certainly going to use it as is (if and when I get it) and if I am dissapointed by the results, I may look into the newer carb thing. I am currently planning on: new coil, points, pointsaver system, new condenser, new plug wires, new plugs, clean the carb, change the oils, and change the antifreeze. I might pull the oil pan (if possible) and clean it off, and make a new gasket as it appears to be leaking. Also going to change the diff oil, and the tranny oil if you guys think it's a good idea. Some electrical looks like it may need some TLC, so I'll replace anything that I think is fit. I'm pretty good at automotive electrical. Any other things I should do to make it a reliable vehicle?
Thanks for your help everyone, this is a great place!!

OnlineYou can still get gaskets for the engine,Fel-Pro makes them and sets along with many internal parts. Ignition wise you could put an Ignitor kit in the dist. and have self contained electronic ignition.Installs in 1/2hr max.

1481 is the kit for the SV8's with Holley dist.
Sure can't hurt changing the gear lube, may well be it's never been done.
