1950 L111 fuel pump

Hi, I have a 1950 L111 and need to replace the fuel pump. The old pump had the glass bowl and the lever that extends into the engine curves upward. I bought a new fuel pump from Rock Auto that they said would work on this truck. The lever curves downward. Will this work on my truck?

Thanks for your help.

This is where you have to try to understand how the pump is activated. Is it possible that one pump lever is activated from the top of the cam and the other makes contact with the cam in a different position. I suggest you mount both plumps, side by side, in a vice and see how and where the levers contact points relate. You could take a few pictures and post them.
My parts IHC catalogue shows two different fuel pumps.

Re: 1950 L111 fuel pump

It looks to me that the tip of lever on the new one is slightly higher than the old one. I also don’t see a push rod inside. Watching videos such as this one (granted its not the same vehicle) show the need to get the push rod up into the correct position. Am I correct that there should be a push rod in there? It’s the original IH engine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6UGEpgOUqg

I’m new to this and learning. I appreciate your help!

I removed all doubt by rebuilding the one I had. Any rubber parts are made for modern fuel.

No, the IHC (and a great many others) ride directly on the cam. The only IHC 6 that I am aware of that had a pushrod for the fuel were the early FAx series with the fuel pump on the opposite side of the engine from the cam

Re: 1950 L111 fuel pump

Based on my own experience in the past the arms have to match, period. I think it has to do more with the space inside the block for the lever to move rather than how it rides on the cam ( over/under ) Plus, you have to remember the geometry of the arm is made so that it stretches the rubber only so much. Just because you can bolt it on does not mean it will work.

I have used a Carter m835 fuel pump many times in the past with success. Google it, Napa seems to have them. You might see a picture with the glass bowl, don't get excited. That is not what you will get. They no longer have the glass bowl.

As I say at work, same same.

I used the Carter M835 from RockAuto on my SD240. Works fine.

Another vote for "Then & Now" I also got fuel pump rebuild kit from them.

Those of you who rebuilt the pump was it difficult? I do think the glass bowl is a cool feature. Any thoughts on converting to a 6 volt electric pump?

It's pretty simple and they supply directions. I'm not a fan of electric fuel pumps in antique vehicles but a lot of people like them.
