I cant get the steering wheel off

So I twist, turn, pull, wiggle. And then I try the same thing with the steering wheel and cant get it off. There is a threaded piece in the steering wheel housing. I took the nut off. under that is a washer. is that threaded? how do I get this !#!@#@#@#$@# thing off...

Re: I cant get the steering wheel off

There was a special puller, kind a like a ball joint press, that had a "bowl" to cup the steering wheel base and pull screw that apply force to the shaft.
Most get their knees behind the wheel to apply force while placing a socket over the shaft to protect the shaft and horn wire, and rap the socket with a hammer. With luck it will pop free.

Re: I cant get the steering wheel off

This reminds me of a time when a new mechanic appeared in the shop. He asked, "Hos do I turn this thing on"
The answer was, Talk softly to it and rub the speedo."
A simple puller can be made from three 3/8" "J" hooks set through a piece of 3/8" steel plate. The hooks pull on the three spokes of the steering wheel. A socket or other suitable something is placed against the nut on the column. tighten the three "J" hook bolts evenly and give a tap to the center of the puller. The wheel should jump off, maybe. leave the nut on the column to protect the threads. One of the member of this forum has the proper puller from SnapOn. He could be dead, I have not heard anything from him in years.

Re: I cant get the steering wheel off

Just did this a while back. This is what I made with 2x4's and a gear puller, like this one. Worked like a champ, but you just have to get to that point of "oh crap I'm pulling to hard on it", then pop, it comes off. Just place a 2 or 3inch piece of thick steel over center of wheel for puller to center on.

3 step process,
1. open beer, put on floor in cab,
2. pull on steering wheel as hard as you can while wiggling it,
3. drink beer after punching yourself in the face with a 70 year old steering wheel,
Gentle Men! you can't fight in here! This is the war room!

Re: I cant get the steering wheel off

Well--here's an update. I have watched every video I can find. I have been both gentle and rough. Used a puller, tried tapping and turning, penetrating oil and wd-40. small impact wrench, twisting, turning, swearing and can only think I just be doing something wrong. Two or three new cracks in it. Suggestions?

Re: I cant get the steering wheel off

Did you try my 2x4 block and Puller (that you could prob get and return). If you put that block under steering wheel it gives you something to pull on that won't wreck the wheel. I was in same boat and this worked quick.
