This is what my gasket over the rear main seal ropes looks like.

Re: GD 214 rebuild.

I will add more words to this. The gasket does not completely cover those rope seals. It will not seal like this I do not believe. I suppose at this pointnthe best is too order a new gasket and see what happens the 2nd time.
Anyone have any thoughts.
Thanks. Mike

Re: GD 214 rebuild.

That is as good as it's going to get! Even if the new gasket covers the rope, the pan doesn't so it will not form a tighter seal!
The rope is compressed and seals the main cap to the block. There is no positive seal on the crank, so it is never going to be a "drip free" engine.
Call it good and move on.

I agree, that's as good as it gets. See if you can compress the rope up into the hole a bit further and then fill it in with some rtv and call it good.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, it's an electrical problem

Re: GD 214 rebuild.

I stuffed the rope down and as tight as I could get it. I will cover then ends with some RTV and keep going.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
This is a GREAT site.

Re: GD 214 rebuild.

What is the correct green color for the GB 214 Engine? Getting close to painting that and was curious. I would not think something like John Deere green would be the correct color. I have all the stuff that hangs on the block painted black.
Thanks for any thoughts.

Been there... This was the color I chose. ACE hardware International Gloss green. Very happy with color and paint is durable.
