Pinion Nut - 52' L110 w/ R-1060 Differential

So I ended up with a bad leak coming from the pinion seal on the rear differential of my 52’ L110. Took the driveshaft off and discovered the pinion nut was chewed up by whoever had installed it the last time. After reading a few posts on the forum, it’s likely the PO didn’t have a thin-walled socket to tighten the nut so they just used a chisel to get it on as tight as possible and get the cotter pin installed. Once I removed the cotter pin, it turned out the nut was not on very tight and came off with just a few light taps with chisel and hammer. That being the case...I could use some advice/help about reinstalling the nut and setting the load for the pinion bearings. I noticed in the service manual where it notes the pinion nut torque to be 200-230 ft lbs. I was able to grind down an old 1 ¼” socket that’ll now work inside the yoke so I can torque it but its left me wondering...should I just start off by torquing it to 200 ft lbs then get the wheels up off the ground and see how it all feels when rotating (ie. not binding)? Or is there some other process I should do instead? I’m a novice at all this so trying to gather a much help and info as possible from the experts.

Thanks in advance…!

I use the FFCBFF method

Four foot cheater bar, push with your foot as hard as you can till you fart, usually good to go,

240 ft/lbs isn't all that much. my weight on a 1' bar. 4' bar and 60 lbs is 240 ft lbs. It needs to be tight, but not all that tight.

850-925 ft/lbs, now that is tight. Takes a torque multiplier and reaction bar, cheater bar and then you fart.
240 ft lbs is what I torque my spoke wheel clamps to, that is done with a socket and "T" bar, no cheater.
Main bearing caps on my Cummins are torqued to 300, and I guess I know why my body is starting to fail, I spent more than 1/2 my life working with these high torques.

Re: Pinion Nut - 52' L110 w/ R-1060 Differential

Well I live in Texas and with our affection for Tex-Mex cuisine a fart typically only takes 5-10 ft lbs!

So I ended up tightening the pinion nut as tight as possible, which really wasn’t all that much. Had to back it off a little to be able to install the cotter pin. So it basically is just as tight (or loose) as when I first removed it. Everything seemed to roll fine with no seal leaks after a 5 mile test run so at least that issue is resolved. The only thing I noticed was a noticeable backlash “pang” when starting off in 1st gear. No issues though shifting from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd gear. Ended up babying it every time I had to stop and start off again. Not sure if this is from just general wear and tear on the gears or perhaps something not getting tightened up correctly?

Thoughts and ideas?

Play in pinion ring gear, worn U joint, slop in transmission,

Need further investigation, these trucks are kind of sloppy off the showroom floor,

My truck rides real nice, until I have been driving wife's car for a few days, then it seems like a worn out hunk next time I drive it,

Thanks BedRock...I think I'm gonna call it a day and leave as is for now. We typically only drive the truck at slow speeds down the back country roads on joy rides so I'll just continue to baby it for as long as it'll hold together. At least my main goal of stopping the pinion seal leak got accomplished. Well....at least my garage floor will appreciate that! ;)
