Questions of 28 Six Speed Special

I have been looking at buying a 1928 Six Speed Special and I have a few questions for those that can help.
The 1928 I am looking at has steel wheels. At what point did these trucks switch from wood to steel or was one an upgrade in 1928?
I have not yet seen the truck in person but the truck I am looking at seems to have a fuel cap on the cowl like a Ford model A,AA. Most of the pictures I have seen online do not have this. Can anyone explain that?
Thanks for your help

Mike

We need pictures and more pictures.
I owned a "late" six-speed special and it was a four cylinder Waukesha with metal spoke wheels.
I'm trying to remember where the gas tank was.

I have a 28 Six speed special. My truck has steel wheels. My gas tank is under the seat and the gas cap is under the passenger seat.

I know this isn't the same year. But here is a 29 for sale with a bunch of pictures. You might be able to contact them through the ad for information. This has been for sale for a mighty long time.

Re: Questions of 28 Six Speed Special

I bought one about three years age and was informed it was a 1928. Someone replaced the wood spoke wheels with metal ones. No brakes on front and gas filler is on cowl like the one you described. Gas tank is under dash. I got two of the wood spoke wheels with it.

Re: Questions of 28 Six Speed Special

Thanks for all of the replies. I do not yet have the vehicle and will post some when I get it. In doing some research it looks like there are some 1928 SSS trucks that have the gas tank in the cowl. My guess is that maybe it is the early ones but not sure. On the steel versus wood wheels it seems like the 1929 and newer had steel wheels but also some had wood. I found plenty of 1928 SSS trucks with steels wheels also. I could not find where this was an upgrade option and what was standard. I realize that the wheels could have been swapped at a later time but enough 1928 trucks with steel to make me think that steel wheels was an option in this year also.

Re: Questions of 28 Six Speed Special

Far as I know, looks like at least some of the 28s had wood spoke wheels. I know of one the was purchased with the wood and at some point the owner retrofitted his with the steel when they came out.
