Re: WHAT DID YOU DO IN YOUR SHOP TODAY

I bought this AKRO MILLS bin rack for $30. The soft material on the wheels was loose and peeling off. The rack was doing the humpty dumpty when moved and the soft material was coming off. I took a pliers and ripped the material off the wheel centres and now the rack rolls smoothly. Tomorrow I am rebuilding a toolbox/shop cart combination. I have lots of good used parts.

I do not subscribe to "triskaidekaphobia" but sometimes I have to wonder is there is something going on. I was happily milling out some pieces for a project. When it was too late to recover from an obvious mistake I had turned hours of careful lay-out and milling into junk. Here is the spoiler, my second try and replacement part went well. The finished piece was much better than the cursed first attempt.

Hopefully, We all learn from our misadventures. I bet everyone has at least one. I am always in awe of what you turn out, and yes, I know, that you rarely show us any "misadventures".

Re: WHAT DID YOU DO IN YOUR SHOP TODAY

I blame this one on hypoglycemia. My low MMOL, 3.8, was sneaking up on me and I failed to take notice. Fortunately I noticed the la-la land feeling and did something about it.
Anyway the situation is fixed except for a little finishing and fitting. I want to treat the pieces with https://youtu.be/RNYIJPwqbdA
Here is a picture of the part I screwed up. I milled balance metal off the front rather than the back. I do not want to make a situation where the sensor responds to a second rising edge. I reduced the weight of the replacement by using thinner material.

The "distributor thingee is all but finished. I am working out the balance issues. the imbalance is only a few grams out but the shaking is still there. I am able to check to 3400rpm crank speed (1700 cam).
I may remake the plastic separator that goes between the upper and lower timing wheels and use stainless or lead threaded inserts for balancing.

Re: WHAT DID YOU DO IN YOUR SHOP TODAY

Winter is coming quickly here in Northern New England. Normally this means bringing all of my paints and spray lubricants etc in from the shop to the basement. Meaning they are no where near where they need to be when you need one. I was planning to build an insulated cabinet to use for heated storage when I had a revelation. An old fridge I had out back destined for the dump is an insulated cabinet already! Anyway a quick coat of paint to match the tool boxes and converted dresser storage and it looks the part. I unplugged the compressor and fan motor from the wiring harness and "fixed" the door light switch so that the light doesn't turn off when the door is closed. I then wired the fridge to an off the shelf controller thermostat which should cycle the bulb on and off for a specified temp. If the stock fridge 40 watt bulb can't keep up I will put a 60 or 75w bulb in. The freezer will be a battery charging station I will pull the motorcycle battery's and keep them in there where I can easily put them on trickle charge once a month or so and they will keep warm. Cordless tool charger will live in there as well.

That's thinking outside the ice box , great idea . What do you think the temp will be in the summer ? I think that if you just keep the light off it will be OK .

Re: WHAT DID YOU DO IN YOUR SHOP TODAY

It rarely gets above 80 in my shop but the controller keeps the bulb off anytime fridge temp hits above 52 degrees (or wherever you set it) it also audibly alarms at high or low set points currently I have that set to 35 and 100 degrees. Heat shouldn't be an issue but up here in Vermont cold certainly is. The whole thing will likely be unplugged in early may as there is no sense wasting the negligible energy or the outlet space for the summer. Still makes contained storage space in the off season.
