Re: Sheet Metal Tube Under Carb??

Kind of interesting, I've never seen something like that in my whole time as a mechanic, BRJ who has a lot of K experience hasn't seen it. It doesn't seam to be in the parts manual from what is said, and yet two have been seen. If it were IHC I would expect to find a part number stamped in it somewhere.
The only explanation that make sense is it was to direct the mixture to the "hot spot" under the carb, or to conduct some of the heat from the hot spot to the base of the carb.
Whatever the reason, it doesn't seamed to be successful enough to be common. Rusting would put metal in the intake stream which isn't good.

My '47 KB1 GD has the tube. Down draft carb. Zenith if I remember correctly. The truck is probably about 95% or more original.

Re: Sheet Metal Tube Under Carb??

I noticed in the parts books for the later SD220 engines there are options for different pistons when operating at above 5000ft altitude. I wonder if this tube on the green diamond engine was some soft of option/modification for altitude, perhaps to prevent carburetor icing somehow?

Re: Sheet Metal Tube Under Carb??

Carb ice has almost nothing to do with altitude, it has to do with humidity.
What I find odd, is that it is sheet metal, and removable. A pressed in heavier steel tube, would seam more practicable.
The fact that it is not common place leads me to think what ever the reason, it wasn't too successful.

Re: Sheet Metal Tube Under Carb??

I think this is the part in question(?). It is not illustrated and list near the end of the manifold parts number list @ Fig. 0108.

I saw this thread and had a hunch about the tube being not illustrated so I took a look...

FYI, I am not really "back" as I have limited internet access. I've been somewhat "lurking" the past month or so though. :t1809:

I also would like to say thanks to those of you who posted replies in my "last post" thread, I can honestly say I was touched.

I 2nd Nikki's words.
With it being listed as a "tube-restrictor" it would seam to indicate some sort of "overspeed" device.
It also states without governor.
May be it was an attempt to limit top speed on these low geared pick-up's?
Anyway Scott has cleared up part of the mystery.
