Chisel Man Strikes Again!

A close relative of nail man chisel man has worked on my truck too. When I rehabed on my front axle the spindle nuts were all boogered up from someone using a chisel to remove and then to tighten them chewing them up in the process. Today I got my back brake drums put on the truck and shook my head as I had to use a grinder to dress up the chisel hacks on the nuts to be able to get my spindle nut socket on them. Besides ruining the nuts just how do you get any idea of the right amount of torque when your'e banging on them with a hammer and chisel. It seems like every old truck I've ever owned has been a victim of chisel man.As you can see this is one of my pet peaves! :t0116:

Re: Chisel Man Strikes Again!

There were actually some young guys arguing in favor of the hammer chisel method to remove larger nuts,

I was,,,,,well a proper size socket isn't That expensive,

about 3 of them ganged up on me telling me nothing wrong with a chisel and hammer, I walked away,,

Re: Chisel Man Strikes Again!

I bought a 6.9 V8 Diesel engine. The fan is attached with a big left hand nut. The nut had been chisel destroyed and the fan was still on the water pump. I bought a used replacement fan assembly, measured the nut and made a wrench to fit.
I would rather have tools I do not need than to need tools I do not have

Re: Chisel Man Strikes Again!

Place I worked had some 6.9's and 7.3's The older ones had left hand threads on the fan and later with serpentine belt had right (IIRC). I remember the shop foreman laying across the fan shroud wrestling, trying to loosen the fan (the wrong way) and asked me to help, I looked at his chest and said, you do know it is left hand thread? It was pressed into his flesh, "fan left hand thread" which was embossed on the fan shroud! Good for a laugh!
