international L 162 questions

Hello everyone im new to this forum.....I just picked up an l162 in good condition that was previsouly restored. Does anyone know where to get a new ignition as they lost the key and the ignition is not usable? Also any idea on where to get door locks etc?

I put a new 6v batery in and she cranks over and poured some gas in her but wont start. Thinking it may need new points etc. Anyone know the part number for that stuff?

Also anyone know the carb model?

Anyone have a manual that they could send me?

THanks so much!!!!!

NAPA Auto and other auto parts stores will have the distributor parts you need, points , rotor, etc.. You could take the ignition switch to a good lock smith and get keys made, if you still have the original door locks he should be able to key those as well other wise you may be searching in the junk yard for the door locks.

Welcome to OldIHC! Post some pictures of your truck!

Cole Hersee will have a direct replacement ignition switch. Try the above link
Do the points in the distributor open and close? Are the points dirty?
Is your new battery installed with the positive to ground? Are all of the ground cables properly grounded (aka connected)
You do not need a manual. It will not tell you anything to help get your truck started. I have an original owner's manual. I got it is several cases of IHC books and literature. I will have another look at the manual and if there is anything I think you can use, I will post pictures. We can talk about the manual, no guarantee it will be available.
Do not pour too much fuel down the carburetor.
It would be better if you were able to fill the carburetor bowl with fuel. Gasoline does not burn. It is the gasoline vapor that burns. Too much fuel could cause a hydro-lock situation and damage the engine if the fuel gets into a cylinder above a piston and the head. Check the spark plugs for clean at the tips.
the advice in the previous post is good information. Take the ignition switch and the door lock to a lock smith and heve them keyed alike. Easy stuff.
I would rather have tools I do not need than to need tools I do not have

Re: international L 162 questions

51intl60guy,

I'm glad you are excited about your new truck. But, you ask a lot of questions that are hard to answer without more details. Your truck may have a Holley 1904 carb. Google it and see if it looks the same. It may be a carter. Kits are available for both. You will most likely need to clean the carb and put a new kit in it. The accelerator valve (rubber bits) go back after sitting for a while

As for the engine, good that it turns over. Now to basic trouble shooting. Do you have spark? If the motor has been sitting a long time, does it have compression?
The piston rings need oil to seal, and thus make compression.

I would check spark first. Take the spark plugs out, and ground one to the head, and turn it over and see if you get any spark. A blue color spark is what you are after.
If you have spark, then I would quirt a drop of oil in the spark plug holes (yes you can use WD-40) if that's all you have.
Put the plugs back in, a little gas in the carb and try again.

IH made 3 basic motors for the S series trucks. 220, 240 and 264. Most of my trucks have the 240. The motors are very similar, but there are some nuances to the 264 that I do not know about.

Welcome to the board. Lots of guys here with a wealth of knowledge.

Binder Books has owners, parts & service manuals for sale for pretty much any IH truck built. I went & looked, they for sure list your truck. Worth buying all 3.

Which switch? Since I dont have the original keys I'm not familiar with how many positions it has? Is it a 2 3 or 4 position switch?

Re: international L 162 questions

Since the starter is activated by a push button on the dash, the original ignition switch has 3 positions: Accessory, OFF, and RUN.
