Re: My new R180

Going to leave the VIN data plate alone until after the DMV does their inspection. The frame VIN will do and I don't want them to think it suspicious that the data plate is sanded or chemical stripped. After the inspection I'll hit it with some paint remover and see what's left. Still not sure why they'd put it on the bed like that.

The old truck looks good, congratulations on it. My guess about the data plate is that whoever owned thought relocating the plate to the bed made it more accessible.

Thanks! I had that thought too, but there are no holes in the stock location. No filler either.

Re: My new R180

Did you check the "kick panel" inside the cab in front of the drivers door? IH put the L-series and SOME of the R-series Serial number plate there [there were no VIN numbers, technically, until 1981].
My posts contain my own opinions...your mileage may vary, void where prohibited, objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear, and alcohol may intensify any side effects.

Ah yes. The four little holes are there. So the data plate could've been safe inside this whole time!

Re: My new R180

If you want to try something a little bit less aggressive than paint stripper use 'Easy Off' oven cleaner.
I've used it in the past it and it works well. Spray it on, wait like 30 seconds, wipe it off. Repeat until clean. You definitely have to do it multiple times, but its worth it if you are really trying to save the paint underneath.

My experience is that paint stripper pretty much goes straight to the metal.

Plus, Easy off and a roll of paper towels is cheaper.
