so my R-162 has the original oil bath air cleaner on it still and it is my first vehicle with an oil bath air cleaner. I was wondering if it would be better performance and maintenance wise to find a modern filter housing to put on and put the oil bath on the shelf for later use.

What do you guys think?

I have often heard that an oil bath air cleaner is more efficient if properly maintained and that they fell out of favor due to the ease changing paper filters which aren't as efficient but I have no technical proof to back that up. For me a sixty some year old motor doesn't look right with a paper filter but that is just my personal preference.

I'm with Binder Mike on this one. When I look back on all the trucks and tractors that I've had over the years, from the 1930's vintage to into the 1960's that had been worked under dusty conditions without proper maintainance. About the only failures were in rubber connecting hoses rotted out and the proper clamps gone.

Once you get it cleaned up, which is a pain, you will probably never have to do anything to it again except drain out oil (which will be remarkably clean) and replace it once a year.

An Oil bath maintains a relatively constant (and low) restriction between service intervals. A paper will do slightly better at stopping dirt after a while in service, but not at first. Paper is low at 1st and rises during use. I'd stick with oil.

I have modified three so far, they all were rusted thru and couldn't easily have been used as oil bath air cleaners any longer, worked perfectly....I now use a K&N filter

thanks for the info guys. I guess I will be sticking with the oil bath then. I guess I will have to learn how to properly service the oil bath filter to keep it working properly. the previous owner said he serviced it right before I purchased the truck so I should have some time before it requires service.

They are not that hard to service. I am sure that several of us can tell you the procedure. To keep drama down, it might be best to contact someone via message. Just my thoughts.
