S-164?

So I noticed on the actual vin plate it says S-164 instead of 160. What was the significance of the 164 designation... if any?

Re: S-164?

The S-160 would have indicated the model series and the S-164 is the actual model of the truck as delivered and appears, presumably, on the vin plate and registration . That means the truck has certain extras the basic model didn't have. I'll use my truck as an example. It's a model L-110 and the badge on the side of the cowl indicated L-110. Other models like L-111 and L-112 would have the 110 badge on the cowl, but because they had chassis up-grades like longer wheel base and/or stronger springs for heavier load capacity, they are actually an L-111 or L-112. I'm more familiar with the L models than I am with the S models and a 160 is a fairly large truck, I assume. A 164 could have had any number of body and/or chassis up-grades that I'm not going to guess at. Maybe someone else with an S will help identify those changes.
L110 owner since 1974, finally rebuilt 2014.

Re: S-164?

Hello rcb,
I have an R152 which is badged R150. The only difference I have found is GVWR. So, the R152 has more capacity, springs, and maybe axle differences otherwise the same truck as badged.
That's my take anyway. I'm pretty sure the S series worked the same.

Re: S-164?

Sounds like it. I noticed Wisconsin's Historical Society documents listed a 166 for the brochure, so just a particular model.

Re: S-164?

rcb, I just looked at Historical Society too. The S series is not very complete like many others are. The R series under R150 shows the differences in GVWR. Must be similar.

I agree with WEW51L110, I took a quick look at the manual the 164 in some categories is 4X4 only, I suggest getting a MT-103 Master Parts Manual. I think Binder Books was acquired by the vendor IH Parts America but not sure.
