What axle on the front of a 4x4 S-160

What axle would a 4x4 S-160 have used? Referring to the 5 lug budd style of course.

Just a guess, Dana 70.
Take some photos and let us see it. That would be helpful.

I don't have one, just exploring options with this 160 I have. 4x4 is a must and instead of a dana 60, I thought I might at least take a look at the original axle, even though that might not be the best option.

The S-160-4X4 used a FA-50.

Re: What axle on the front of a 4x4 S-160

It's called an FA50, in IH parlance. It's an Eaton design, built by IH. I have lots of info on these. Let me know if I can be of any help. I'm rarely on this site. so the best place to reach me is on my Facebook page (International Harvester 140/160 4x4 Trucks).

I made a slight update to the rebuild write up that Rob Peterson put together many years ago. I have it on my website here:

https://ih1404x4.weebly.com/parts-part-numbers-etc.html

Scroll down a bit. It's under the heading "FA50 Front Axle Tear Down . . . "

I also need to update the doc to include the recent discovery of a modern replacement for the long extinct trunnion seal. That discovery is also documented on the binderplanet.com in this post:

http://www.binderplanet.com/forums/inde ... ns.140680/

If you want a FA50, I'll be on the lookout for you. If you want original, I completely get it. If you want a daily driver, highway hauler, you may be better off with a later axle.

Hope this helps.
