R-112 Steering Gear Fluid/Grease

What does the steering gear take on the R-112? The service manual I have doesn't specify. Do I fill to the top of the fill hole that's on top of the gearbox? My 1965 Mustang takes hard grease. Is that what this takes too?

Sounds like a heavy weight gear oil is the winner. Thanks.

Re: R-112 Steering Gear Fluid/Grease

These old Steering boxes tend to leak the gear oil out quickly and make a mess, they didn't even do so well when new. For years now I have been using John Deere Cornhead grease in the manual steering boxes of all my old trucks, IHC (2), Jeep (both are Ross boxes) and my old F250 with great results. It is self leveling, will not cavitate around the worm gear and does not leak past the seals. It is fairly inexpensive, comes in standard grease gun tubes and is available at J D dealerships.
