A matched taper joint is one of the strongest connections available, I don't remember the exact number, but it retains something like 95% of a the strength of a single piece. Often the taper is deliberately made with a slight difference in angle so it can be released. Matched and lapped tapers that are installed in tension (with a nut pressing the two together) can be almost impossible to separate esp if the outer part is heated before being torqued on.
As an example of how strong a tape joint can be, VW on their diesel used a taper alone, no key, to lock the cam to the timing belt pully, and think of the shock load of a cam shaft, as the cam lobes actuate the valves.

Thank you for everyone's help! I was able to get the drum off today with a drum puller my neighbor let me borrow.
