Re: R series with an S bumper

Mine in the picture above is even worse than it looks. My neighbors theory is a past owner had tried to push a stump over with it and caved it in. When that didn't work he hooked a chain to the home made hook that was welded on it and tore some of the metal on the top portion. The thing's a mess on an otherwise straight truck. I am hoping to find another original if I can, it is definitely a different style than what was on my L112. If all else fails I'll be heating it with a torch and carefully trying to bend it back in shape and weld up the tear.

Re: R series with an S bumper

My dad sold these trucks new, and his biggest complaint about the L/R/S series were that the bumpers were "soft as warm butter." On the company '52 L-112, he and granddad made some "bumper guards"/push bars out of a section of a Farmall H tractor swinging drawbar.

But I never, ever saw an L/R/S front bumper that wasn't bent and kinked at the frame, and digging into [or about to dig into] the grille corner/front fender.
My posts contain my own opinions...your mileage may vary, void where prohibited, objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear, and alcohol may intensify any side effects.

I have to agree with B72. The Ford pickup bumpers are stronger and better looking. I was looking at off road front bumpers on Craigslist. The right one could look really good.

Re: R series with an S bumper

B72, I agree I haven't seen one yet that had a straight bumper. When I got my L the bumper was buckled on both sides and pushing into the front clip far enough on the passenger side that it had torn a hole in the sheet metal. I hammered it out using a short piece of railroad track my old man had and a twelve pound sledge.

Do the Ford bumpers work well on the rear?

Re: R series with an S bumper

L and R use same bumper S is lighter tapering at ends,

however there are a lot of S trucks with L, R, slightly heavier bumper,

so maybe you could choose back then which one you wanted
