S120 axles

So I’m just getting back into the groove with a truck that I bought a while back but have done very little with. The plan is to get it to the useability that was intended for it when it was new. No, I won’t be hooking it up to a goose neck and hauling 20 feet of round bails, but I would like to be able to occasionally pull a car with it or take it hunting. So my question is; would any of you fine folks suggest running the stock axles? Are the parts for them easy enough to find? And if you would swap in newer axles, what are some candidates that wouldn’t be a whole lot wider than stock?

Re: S120 axles

First, two wheel drive or four wheel drive? I am assuming that it has the 6 on 7 1/4 bolt spacing wheels? If so, Drums are almost unobtainium.
Measure your backing plate spacing to determine the width of axle you can use for your minimums. Do not forget to figure back spacing for your wheels. you could go with a bit wider axle and use wheels that have a deeper back spacing and still clear. Just a couple of things to think about. Others will speak up.

Re: S120 axles

My apologies. The truck is 4x4 and it’s actually a 7 bolt pattern

Re: S120 axles

No apologies needed. I have not had 7 lug rims, so can not speak to them. I did read that ford had some. Might look to that line for things. Being 4x4 helps if you wanted to body swap. just my thoughts

Re: S120 axles

I was mistaken. You’ve probably never heard of a 7 lug because it doesn’t exist haha. If I were to swap diffs would it be particularly hard to put in an open knuckle front end since the original axle is closed knuckle?
