My existing L-112 came with an already installed Ford 8.8 rear end, with 4:11 gearing, and disc brakes. My parts truck came with the rear end in the pictures. It also has 4:11 gearing and drum brakes.
Is this an original International rear end?
Is it worth using?
Parts availability, and disc brakes leads me to believe I should stick with the 8.8.
Any thoughts?

Sure looks like the OEM IHC rear to me, Parts are not easy to come by, and I am not a fan of the semi-floating rear with tapered axles. Not the strongest way to build one. I'd stick with the Ford unless a period correct resto is your goal.

I agree. Find someone doing a restoration and make them the new owner of the IH rear end. I've never heard of problems with the factory rear end, except parts availability.

Nothing wrong with the center "pig" on IHC rears, it is the tapered axle/keyed hub that is the weak link. Add the that the semi-floating design where the axle shaft carries all the loads, and it isn't the best design. Fine for it's day and low torque requirements, but the Ford unit will be stronger.

Also, the 8.8 will be much easier to get ring & pinion sets for if you want a different ratio.

Just remember, if you go discs in back you need to go discs in front,

you can have discs front drums back, but not other way around,
