Re: Oil Type?

engine oil is best.
olive oil, castor oil, air tool oil not so good
10W-30, 10W-40 or 15w-40 will all be fine in warm weather.

my 1937 Diamond T had a caution plate on it saying to NOT use bacon grease or animal fats in the motor or transmission, they felt they had to state this for a reason,,,,,,

Re: Oil Type?

I feel very fortunate to have had my motor rebuilt by an old school machinest . lot of new stuff in it , there is a "break-in" motor oil that he recomended that I used , and after that also on his recomendation I use racing motor oil 10/30 I think , but what both of these have that is most important is zinc .

For sure. - I forgot to mention that - good call.
(The 15W-40 Rotella T with Triple Protection oil has approximately 1200 ppm of zinc)

People tried a lot of stuff in the depression years. I know one man who claimed to burn home heating oil during WW2 in his car. Said he started on gas, got the engine just below boiling by blocking off the radiator, then adding the oil (diesel). He said you had to be sure to end the trip with a few gal of gasoline.

I like 30W Mystic, mostly because it is produced here in Oklahoma. If I were someplace colder I'd run 20W50. Brand doesn't really matter so long as you are buying a good quality oil.

Re: Oil Type?

I have to ask, how do you determine what is a good quality oil?
I would rather have tools I do not need than to need tools I do not have
