BD 240 Manifold

I’m thinking about getting my manifolds ceramic coated to help preserve them. Has anyone done that and how do u like it? Also does anyone have an intake or exhaust manifold for sale? My exhaust manifold is pretty pitted. For a ‘56 S-120. Bd240. Does anyone know if a manifold from a 220 would fit?

Re: BD 240 Manifold

An early exhaust manifold - from an SD220 before engine number 261932 should fit. After that, the manifold would fit the head, but the exhaust pipe diameter is smaller. The easiest way to tell which 220 exhaust manifold you're looking at, is whether the exhaust pipe bolts up with three bolts (larger, and as in your picture), or with two bolts.

Paul is the three bolt smaller or larger than the two bolt? Just curious.

Re: BD 240 Manifold

The three bolt manifold is larger. I still don't understand the IH thinking, but I'm no engineer. The earlier SD220's had flat top pistons. Then they increased the compression and horsepower with the step head piston, and decreased the size of the exhaust.

Re: BD 240 Manifold

In the S series parts manual MT-103, the 220 intake is smaller too, the line up rings are smaller, but I think the would work fine. BTW, I have the original engine that came with flat top pistons. Its been rebuilt a few times.

Re: BD 240 Manifold

you can put a 220 manifold on a 240 but intake rings won't fit, 240 has larger intake ports, you have to locate it to center best you can,

intake diameter increases going into head, so no worries,

BUT a 240 intake on a 220 the diameter of the head intake is smaller than the 240 manifold, may cause problems with airflow and flow of the gas
