SD220 STARTER MOTOR

Hi,
Yesterday my starter motor basically disintegrated, may unfortunately have run up briefly with the engine when started but instantly turned off.....looks very dry where the Bendix is and i think this may have stuck.
My electrician looked at it today and reckons that only the case might be of any use, so.....
Anyone know where i might get another, either new, rebuilt or good used unit, or worstways who manufactured the starters for these L110/112 trucks with the SD220 engine? He could not find any stampings with manufacturer, casting no. etc. He is giving the unit to a remanufacturer over here who are good, to see their opinion on overhauling but obviously the trouble is parts are scarce over here in the UK......There are companies that list starters etc but mainly these are for later IH diesel engines as were fitted to some of the tractors, the IH trucks were not supplied in the UK but some tractors of a later age were.
This truck was converted to 12 volt, does this normally give any problems re the starter, i read before that the starter should be ok if the voltage is increased to 12v from 6?
First issue i have had with it starting wise, has always been a great starter (until now).
Any help appreciated. Manufacturer(s) name of starter, part no of unit, where i am likely to source one etc.

I found on on Travelallparts.com for $469.99+ a $100 core charge. It looks like Robertson's And Sons had them but are currently out of stock (part # 140-10251) you might try contacting them and see if they'll rebuild yours. Don't just look for L series parts, look for R and S as well and even some farm equipment should have the same starter.

IH used Delco-Remy [GM] starters.

6v requires twice as many amperes as 12V to do the same job, so 6V wiring is made to carry twice the amps as 12V wiring.

I am away from base this week---my electrician gave the starter to his rebuilder/supplier, this is a good shop who are reasonably priced, well known in the area where i am located.
He told me they have one they think will do the job, needs checking with the truck for mounting logistics, depth/clearance of Bendix, etc etc. Might be an option as long as nothing needs altering much, in which case i will follow up with the leads you gave me here, this starter i believe is listed for an old Mercedes, is also a Delco starter.
Like i said, it may only be wiring needs altering for 12 volt etc or depending on fitment of terminals/connections. Physical dimensions they seem to think will do the job, will need to check on direction of rotation and the like but as long as without too much alteration it can definitely work, i am considering this.
Will keep you posted as he wants the truck there to see more what may be involved. Not normally interested in this kind of thing and try to keep things original but if they say it should work, willing to take a look.

So the logistics of the starter fitting are looking bleak without some engineering, which i would rather not get into unless no choice, physical size is the same at the front where it goes into the bell housing but bolt holes are reversed ie threads are in the starter on the one we would try and fit compared to in the bell housing on the original. Due to the casting on the new one also, if it were to be enlarged on the bolt holes to mount like the original, there is not enough clearance for one of the bolts to fit like original due to the shape of the starter casing, and no accesss from the back of the bell housing due to shape and bolt holes not through to the back of the housing, so again, no access.
Buzzman72, If the starters are Delco Remy, would you know if the starters were specifically for IHC or is there a chance a unit for a 50's 6 cylinder Chevrolet or similar may fit, or would that be too easy? If that was the case, theres a chance a supplier over here may even have one or could obtain one, when you mention IHC, well, you know the sound of confidence when talking to suppliers?

My old time nearby electrical shop got me a 12 volt starter for my 53 R110 220 ci, direct bolt in...a Delco, after my 6 volt took a crap 2 times. Think I paid around $120. Guy told me it also fits a fork lift. I'll check if I have any numbers.
