1955 design change?

Hello all,

I have a 1955 R-112 that I restored as my high school project. I didn't know anything about these trucks prior to getting mine, but I do love them more than the other brands. I just have two questions about mine. First, mine has a single piece back window, but most of the other '55 trucks I see have dual windows in the back. Was this a mid-year design change? Second, I have a SD220 that came with my truck. No idea if it's the original engine because there are no IHC stamps in the block. I'd be surprised if it was the original. Any thoughts or comments on these two items would be most welcome.

Re: 1955 design change?

my understanding is that in 55, the single back window was implemented rather than the dual windows.

However, they titled these trucks based on sales date, not build date, so you could be seeing '55s that were actually built in '54, but titled as '55. That appears to be the case with my cab based on it's serial number.

Re: 1955 design change?

I call the twin window R that uses the 1950-1952 L series cab "first generation"
L cab has twin rear windows, cardboard inner door liners, smaller door window, swing type outer door handle,

in mid R production they went to the second type cab, this cab has push button outer door handle, taller door windows, all metal door, big single back window,
this "second generation" R cab was continued into the S series truck,

the R most likely came with the SD-220 motor, your ID block is a small raised area on passenger side front corner of block, above generator below the manifold,

Thanks for the information. I'll have to check again for a stamp on the engine block. No generator because the truck was switched to a 12V system with an alternator, but I'm assuming it's in the same location by the alternator. Still interesting that there's no man on the tractor cast into the block. We checked over the whole block while it was torn down and couldn't find it. My dad's R160 has it on his engine. Are SD220's supposed to have this man on the tractor symbol cast into the block?

An SD won't have the man-on-tractor cast into the block. It should have the triple diamond logo cast in the block on the driver's side toward the back. Down from #6 spark plug.

I'll have to look for both of these items later on this week. I'll post pictures and update over the weekend.

Re: 1955 design change?

Thank you Dean, I'll have to post pictures in the build thread at some point.
I still haven't gotten a chance to look for the stamp and triple diamond cast, but talking with my father last night, he remembers there being no cast and no stamp. Would this indicate that what I have is a replacement block?
