Lifter rod cover gasket

When replacing the gasket on the cover is there anything that can be used to hold it in place while getting the cover back on.

GM parts departments sell this product https://teaguecustommarine.com/em0011/g ... pound.html This is the product we used at work until the purchasing department guys discovered it was made by LOCTITE then the company changed.
Something very important is to apply the gasket sealing compound to the removable cover, ONLY. This will hold the gasket in place for installation. Another trick of the trade is to use one or two studs to align the cover and gasket and hold the cover in place while the other fasteners are installed.
It is good practice to check the metal cover for flatness, where it will go against the engine. So many covers and oil pans are damaged by aggressive tightening. In the absence of a torque wrench, I like to use a palm ratchet to tighten the fasteners in situations like this. It is unlikely an average person will be able to overtighten the fasteners with a palm ratchet.

I personally have always used Permatex and I use it on all my covers and pans, it just makes gasket installation so much easier. Just don't put any on the block side as it is a pain to clean off the engine when you are replacing the gasket.
