engines used in other applications

Hi i am still wandering down the road of trying to put a automatic in my truck and have come up blank from any ihc sources, they all know about the things but not available. Yesterday i took another direction not much luck so far but i have discovered that there was a SAE #3 bellhousing available which would connect to a gm or ford box. i would like to find one i have been looking on the internet for applications where ihc engines were used to drive other manufactures equipment like a water pump or a boat but that has got mr goggle stumped would any of you guys have a lead for me to start searching thanks mike

Most IHC engines were available as a "power unit" so check with an irrigation specialist in KS, NE and other places that do a lot of pumping.
SAE flywheels housings are big and bulky and will not likely fit in truck without cutting of the cab. It will place the trans back further and will require an SAE flywheel, not the OEM truck flywheel. You will then need not only the adaptor from SAE to trans, but also the SAE flywheel to torque convertor adaptor.
It will not be a simple bolt in undertaking, and I would argue you would be ahead by having a custom adaptor direct from the engine to trans of your choice made.

R Series came with a a GM Hydramatic 4 speed automatic. I have that pickup. No adapting necessary?
The trans is a brute but they shift OK in the other applications I've driven. Like K-F.
I've never heard of the configurations denoted by SAE number. Usually it's like "BOP", Chevy or Ford big or small. That kinda thing.

Never heard of a 4 speed back then, and I thought they used the Borg Warner unit, many low use OEM's did Jag, Checker (until they went with GM powertrain) Volvo and many others. When I worked at the trans shop they had on B/W unit in stock, it was like the C4 and FMX, in that the bell was a separate casting, so was easy to adapt.
Intrestingly GM made a Dual hydomatic for trucks, that was basically two hydromatics, one on top of the other and had multiple ratios, It never worked well and was so replaced by the Allison truck auto's.

SAE sizes are common in industrial applications, like pumps, hyd units, generators, etc. Often SAE housings have "feet" on the bottom for mounting to a plate
If I read it correctly, he can buy a SAE to BOP or Chevy trans adaptor, Although SAE is common for Allison's in the larger SAE sizes, normally SAE 2 or 1

Hi First what is"bop" not sure i can understand that one. next i started with thinking of a purpose built spacer has anyone ever built or would anyone have a blueprint of a ihc engine side of the bell housing. as apart from removing my engine and transmission i have nothing to start with a automatic from a scrap yard would be easy to find in the spring . no one wants to go outside in this type of weather around 8" of snow today. Monsonmotors do you want to sell the transmission in your truck or do a swap !!! mike

BOP= Buick, olds Pontiac They used a common bolt pattern on their engines.

Re: engines used in other applications

If you are serious about it, I would look for a block with flywheel to use for mock-up/designing It doesn't have to run or be useable block, but would have the bolt pattern and distances needed to make the adaptor. It isn't a cheap undertaking but...

Re: engines used in other applications

In surfing the net, I've come across two outfits that make adapters for engine-to-trans. They are:

http://transmissionadapters.com ( Bendtsen's Speed Gems, Inc., Ham Lake, Minn. )
and
https://www.novak-adapt.com ( Novak Conversions, Logan, Utah )

I haven't had any personal experience with either, but it might be someplace else to start.........

Re: engines used in other applications

Hi i have done a lot of searching on the net called a couple of spots only got to mention a silver diamond and the conversation dries up real fast, nothing that old and i guess not a lot of people looking for that type of thing. Most would rip the engine out and fit a modern engine and yes now i have started down this path i don't think i will throw the towel in just yet just keep on poking and digging see what comes up mike
