No valve clatter?! BG265

When I was preparing my new BG265 to run I set the valve lash to about .028” to give things some space until I got it hot enough to adjust them properly. I hear some of the familiar valve clatter that I always hear from my SD engine. Once the engine was hot today I pulled the valve cover and reset the lash to a snug .025”. The clatter has gone away. I recall reading that no valvetrain noise in an SD was a bad thing. Does the same hold true for a BG?

.024 to .026, engine hot and idling, so you should be good. Congratulations on getting it up and running. Should have some extra power as well.

Re: No valve clatter?! BG265

I'm afraid to try the "idling" part, but I did get it to temp before I pulled the cover. Seems like it'd be hard on the feeler gauges and challenging to keep the wrench, screwdriver, and feeler gauge in place while the rocker is rocking... Dunno.

It's inhaling air/fuel through a soda straw at the moment, but it seems to run decently. I hope to have an adapter made up this week for the 2bbl manifold and get the manifolds trued up. My AFR gauge says I'm running a bit lean on anything but WOT but we've got a good start.

I tried doing it hot and idling one time. While the fan blew an oil mist onto the windshield, it hammered the feeler gauge pretty good as the screwdriver and wrench went all over. Figured from then on that just setting them hot with the engine off was more accurate.

Hot and idling in my experience is a two man job, one to use the feeler gauge and one to run the screw driver and wrench. It is also a tad bit on the messy side.

I've tried the idling adjustment too, works better with go/no go feeler gauges, but still a PITA

I just get motor plenty up to temp then do it turned off,

Either way it's a lot easier than adjusting GRD valves under hot azz manifold
