Knob Removal

Could someone enlighten me on how to get these darn knobs off the dash??????

I am trying to pull the dash panel and need to remove some of the knobs... they seem stuck. I see the hole in them but no set screw.

A little crazed after having to grind off all the screws because they were rusted. Now I am stuck!

Your help appreciated!

Re: Knob Removal

Fred, I may be wrong, but that hole, takes more like a Paper clip wire, I believe there is a little "spring steel" clip that needs to be depressed. Others with more or better information, should post up soon.

Re: Knob Removal

Yes it does take a small pin such as a paperclip BUT very stiff then they just pull off. They are similar to the old style clips on a Chevy speedometer only a lot smaller. :)

Re: Knob Removal

Inside each knob is a spring clip that the control shaft passes through. The clip is set at an angle, toward the opening. When the knob is installed it passes through the clip and pushes the clip back just a little. At this point the clip jams and locks onto the shaft. If you have been pulling on the knob, stop and push it toward the dash. When the knob is fully pressed in, hold it there and insert a stiff wire into the little side hole. Feel around until you are on the dashboard side of the clip then gently move the clip back and while holding the clip in this position carefully remove the knob.
A paper-clip will most likely not work because it is too soft. If you have a piece of. Bowden Cable wire, it is the right thickness and strength. For those who may not know, the control cables in your Binder are, Bowden Cables . Lots of luck. Easy does it.

Re: Knob Removal

Thanks guys... I tried that with a allen wrench last night but didn't have any luck... today is a new day full of possibilities! Maybe I can even get this looking like a dash again!

Re: Knob Removal

Keep it simple I found that a brad from my nail supply worked very well. Just insert in hole nail pointing away from the dash, then move it towards dash, you can feel the clip inside. Pry on the clip and pull at the same time. May have to rock it a bit. Should come right off.

Re: Knob Removal

I've pulled probably 30+ of these knobs off, and every time is a challenge, sometimes they slip right off, other times I fight with em for a while,

once you find the "sweet spot" to push on the clip they jump right off, I think the tough one to remove had been yanked on to try to force it off by previous owner,

it is almost a zen thing, go slow and mellow, the more you wrestle it the more the truck laughs at you and tightens it's grip.

Re: Knob Removal

Thanks... That worked out great! Once I found the clip with the tip of my pick, they came right off!
