How To: Oil Bath Air Filter to Paper Element
All of my prior attempts to convert an L, R, or S series oil bath air filter to a paper element have involved cutting and drilling "lids" and bases from sheet metal, or adapting parts from other filters. I think I have finally found an easy way, and thought I'd post for those who wish to do the same. I started with this type of air cleaner.
Here's the top part.
Cut the top. I cut it 1 1/4 inches below the lip.
Once you've cut around the top, the insides just pull out and can be tossed, leaving this. And the top is done.
Mark 3 1/4 inches down from the top edge of the bottom bowl.
Be sure the base is sitting on a level surface. Fill to the marked line with epoxy. I used AeroMarine Epoxy Resin #300 and Hardener #21, available from Amazon, but any two-part expoxy should work. It takes about 1/2 cup, but I mixed a little extra, just to be sure. It's clear, so difficult to see in the picture, but it doesn't take much.
And that's it. Other than painting, the filter is ready. A Baldwin PA 662 filter fits nicely. The cross-references for this filter are NAPA 2241, CarQuest 87241, Fram CA142PL, or AC A44C or A78C
Drop the lid back on and it's ready to go.
