SD 220 rear seal

Finally got my motor parts back from the shop and started putting together. I'm struggling figuring out the rear main seal. there is a lip type seal in the kit that is the right size for the rear hub on the crank, but in the rearmost main cap and the block, that seal doesn't appear to fit there. There are the two pieces of rope type material that fit in one groove and the other groove is about an eighth inch wide on the bearing side and then tapered into the cap and block. All I remember being in there when I tore it down was the rope type material. Do I have the wrong seal? Thanks for any help. Paul

Paul, I missed your post.
Did you get the rope seal thing figured out, I believe that is the one for your engine.

Also, for the guys that have leaky seal in truck change, when you use a sneaky pete, when you go to install, have one guy pull, not to hard, have another guy turn the crank the seal will walk rite in there. INFO ONLY

Re: SD 220 rear seal

As Kevin mentioned, the rope is your seal. The circular one in the gasket kit must be for later models. I had one in my kit as well.

Isn't the circular seal for the timing chain cover around front of crankshaft ?

Or is there another one for that. Been years since I did a SD motor. The brain fades away

Re: SD 220 rear seal

My timing gear cover had a circular felt rope for it as well. Pic has drive pulley and nut removed. The circular seal would work if the cover was changed to accept a press in seal.

Re: SD 220 rear seal

that's right, early ones used the felt seal, later had an upgrade to a rubber current type seal,

parts book shows timing cover/seal as a unit and also seal as a separate item, so there you go.
