Straved for fuel

these old trucks dont pick up that last gallon of fuel do they? and will a truck pop a little and sound sick and shimmy extremely violently in 3rd gear if its just barely getting enough gas to keep it running?

That could be a timing issue as well....

A popping sound in the intake is indeed a sign of very lean running. Yes, it can be caused by other things.
