5 speed OD

Ok so a guy on another site told me if I wanted 5 speed overdrive I could take the ZF5 tranny from a 1986 Ford F-350 with the IHC built 7.3L 444CID Diesel and all I have to do is machine the adapter plate and it will bolt right up. any thoughts?

Re: 5 speed OD

Hmm. I will have to measure My zf47 to see how it matches up to the bell on the t98 I have for the old 220. I am thinking Not, but...

Anyone else with Ideas?

Re: 5 speed OD

I would think, even if you could do it, the ZF would not be the best choice. The zf series takes alot of abuse, however it does absorb alot of power overall. Atleast compared to lighter transmissions. Gm t5 would be better, assuming it can be converted like they do for ford flatheads. But even those are getting hard to find. Wilcap(Sharp) co. does lots of conversions for the big 3 motors. I have no doubt it is within their capacity to do a conversion. But the cost might not be the flavor that agrees with people.

Re: 5 speed OD

Some second thoughts....
Most conversions are done with transmissions that have removable bell housings. The ZF line has an integral housing. Things with removable hosing would be gm and ford t5,gm automatics, and 4 speeds based on older designs. Most of the modern stuff has integral housings, atleast in fords case anyways. for 2wd Od gm t5 and mustang t5 would be about the only option. the mustang t5 has the shifter on the tailshaft and most likely will interfere with a bench seat. Linkage can be made however. A t5 based adaptor would allow the expensive aftermarket transmissions.

If you dont want to spend a butt load on getting OD. Go find a ford truck with a windsor/300 i6 with a zf5( trans case for 4wd).

Re: 5 speed OD

No such thing as "all I have to do".
I'm sure the clutch disc has a different spline, yours is 1-1/4" - 10 tooth which was almost exclusive to IH and the pilot bearing is very likely different too. You'd have to find a disc with the right sizes that will work with the pressure plate. Then you go to the output shaft, more modifications and expense, fab new C-members...

All in all,it won't be cheap (or that easy).

Re: 5 speed OD

OK guys, this is my best guess, there is adapters made for the Scout bellhousing, typically for a T-18-T19, which I have in my S-120-4X4-240T.
This would not be cheap but if I had a 2 WD truck I would go this way. First there is the adapter, then a NV4500 Transmission, then install the new input shaft into the NV4500, are you tracking? probably have to raise the floor, shorten the drive shaft, the NV is a large transmission with OD.
Also reading the Novak Conversion site in the gray area on the right side of the page, it says the T-18- 19 and one other 4 speed trans is stronger than the NV4500. A t-98 is the same case as T-19.
Here is a link to the adapter, all the scout sites sell these, http://www.shopih.com/CPT-NV4500-ADPTR-KIT-p-MT.html

Re: 5 speed OD

I googled ZF5 and according to it this is supposed to be a pre-1988 one http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EqXoDFTCbY4/T ... %2BT19.JPG

Re: 5 speed OD

FWIW...
The SV8 & IH 4 cyl's (which are an SV8 "cut in half") are vastly different than the SD,BD,BG so any adapter for them won't even be close. Also,Scouts never used IH 6's only the AMC 232/258 which are also very different.

Re: 5 speed OD

Scott from my understanding, I could be wrong but, the adapter bolts to the back of the bell housing. if so it looks like it would work, I never called them.
