Carter Carb rebuilt kit

Working on installing a carb kit for the Carter 735SA carburetor. I have an old parts lists from 1948 where the carb cost $12. I'll post in two seperate postings to keep jpegs larger.

Re: Carter Carb rebuilt kit

Carb body cavity had a lot of crud in it. Bloody knuckle was a screw driver slip trying to remove a clip.

Re: Carter Carb rebuilt kit

I have two questions for you guys that have the Carter YF-735S Carb.

First, My new float valve is about 0.10" shorter than the original as seen in pic. That is a big adjustment on the float tab. I believe they sent the wrong valve. Would I be correct? Float sits level with old valve.

My 2nd question is what is the felt seal shown in the 2nd pic used for on the Carb? Is it a shaft seal....is so where used?

Pics are a little out of focus... I may of been too close to the parts for my camera.

Re: Carter Carb rebuilt kit

Did they give you a new seat to go with the valve? The new seat might be a little shorter to allow for the shorter valve.

I think I put the felt seal on the throttle shaft but I wasn't sure where it went, either. That was my best guess. I had mine apart a few months ago. I had to use a new kit for the soft parts plus an NOS kit for some hardware to get everything I needed.

Re: Carter Carb rebuilt kit

Jared,

I did have a new seat in the kit...same size as the original. I sent an email to the place I bought the kit. I may give them a call on Monday and hopefully they'll just send me the correct length valve. Thanks on the shaft seal advice.

Response from Jon at Carbqueen on the shorter needle valve.

Your carburetor SHOULD have the shorter valve (25-33s) which had been discontinued for probably 30 years until we started making them. The float tab should be bent almost straight down, and then back almost parallel to the main arm, forming a modified "L". Lots of enterprising "mechanics" just tried to make something work, rather than doing it correctly.

Regards. Jon.

Hello Jon,

I received the carb kit 1574 and began replacing parts. One thing I notice is the new float valve is about 0.10" shorter than the original.
(See attached Pic. The original valve has an additional shoulder that extends the length by 0.10". )

That seems like a big adjustment on the float tab with the shorter valve. You can see the float tab is still in the factory location.

Can you verify that I have the correct length float valve in my packet. Carb is a Carter YF-735SA

Thanks for assistance.
