front 5 lug

so I read somewhere that I can just put the 5 lug drum/hub onto my R120 spindles, is this true? do I need the backing plates from the half ton also? are the shoes/hardware the same too? is the L110 and the R110 hub/drum the same?
anything else I should know about this switch?

thanks
Jason

Re: front 5 lug

Changing out old and obsolete parts for more old and obsolete parts seems a waste of time, to me.
An easy fix is to upgrade the axles to something modern. I have used Dana44 axles from a 1997 Dodge 1500 4X4. You will bolting straight axles on where there were straight axles. These axles are readily available and not expensive. Add some RAM 20 inch wheels and WOW.
BTW, don't forget to add a Cummins 4bta for an easy fit repower.

yes, front drum from a 110 will go onto a 120 spindle and back plate brakes are same, rear axle obviously this can not be done, But Ford axle has same bolt patterrn as 110

Thanks Jon, that’s what I was looking for. I’ve been keeping my eye out for the explorer rear axle also. Thanks again.

Re: front 5 lug

The Ford Explorer 8.8 axles are very easy to find and the prices are often less than a few hundred $. The 8.8 is available with drum or disc brakes.
Try to remember, the 8.8 is not a 3/4 ton axle. It has been my experience, with Old IHC trucks, the frames were loose and often damaged because the frames were too light. The first good frame came under an R130.
I bought a 1953, R150 with a 246.5 inches (6.261 meters) frame for a special IHC project. The frame I bought never left the orchard and was always shed stored. I paid $1000 for the frame (delivered) and another $500 for rust free standard 2 door cab.

I am aware that the 8.8 is not a 3/4 ton axle. I put a 8.8 in my last IHC, a 1950 L110. I do not need a 3/4 ton truck. this truck will just be for taking the grandkids on joy rides and for me and my wife to go get coffee and tulle around in.

Re: front 5 lug

I found an A100 in a "pull your part", does anyone know if these front hub/drums are the same as the R series? I don't have a parts book for them. thanks.

Re: front 5 lug

The R100 used 11" brakes, and my guess is that the A100 did as well. I'll check it today and get you some information. The drums for those are non-existent. I think you would be better off using the 12" brakes from an R110 or A110.

Re: front 5 lug

The easy part - Hubs (84879HX) and spindles (69567R11) for R100, R110, R120, A100 and A110 are all the same, so you should be good with what you already have there.
Again, I'll suggest you look for 110 series brakes and not 100 series, as your current backing plates (Left: 81004R11, Right: 81005R11) are the same as the L, R, S and A 110 series, so you already have those.
Brake drums for the R110 and A110 are 97377HB.

If you try to use the R, L, S or A100 backing plates, it will depend on whether they have single end cylinders or double end cylinders, and you would be looking for the 11" drums (127017R91), which are not available and would leave you trying to find drums for an early Scout and then having to have them re-drilled for the bolt pattern.

Unless I'm missing something, I believe you could get the hubs from the A100, new shoes, drums and hardware for an R110, mount them on what you currently have for backing plates and spindles, and be good to go.

Re: front 5 lug

Thanks Paul. I guess I need to go back to make sure that it was a A100 for sure. I know it's an "A" series and half ton, but there wasn't any emblems on it.
