Re: 6v wipers on a 12v system

Buzzman, I used the vacume motor linkage and adapted for a 12v motor from new Navistars. The vacume linkage is made for a back and forth motion from the motor and not a continuous rotation so had to re-engineer it a mite. Got it to work but everything is really tight. MM

Thanks for that info, Mike!

My '51 has the vacuum motor, so I'm a little familiar with it.

Re: 6v wipers on a 12v system

Here is a photo of the motor and linkage. I kept having to trim the bracket I made to hang due to interference. Did I mention both wipers park to the same side? Guess I could go back and attempt to rework it. Motor spins, have to change ratio so when it starts around the wiper hasn't gone past center so that it returns in a back and forth motion. Is that clear as mud or what?? http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/tt20 ... olt014.jpg

Re: 6v wipers on a 12v system

I think the IH's of the 1960's used a 12V electric motor that spun a disc with a pin that the wiper linkages for both sides attached to. To make them wipe in opposite directions, and both park in the "down" position, one side hat the linkage attaching to the bottom of the shaft spindle for the arm, while the linkage arm attached to the TOP of the shaft spindle on the opposite side.

Not 100% sure that's correct--it's been almost 40 years since my dual, under-the-dash speakers for my 8-track player knocked one side of the linkage off the pin that drove it--but that's how I remember it.

Re: 6v wipers on a 12v system

I did not run my electric wipers for long, since I have no windshield yet, but my '54 R100's wipers had no change in speed between the 6v battery, or the 12v battery with 6v wiring.

I'm subscribing to this thread in case someone posts the proper voltage reducer, and/or heater motor.

Re: 6v wipers on a 12v system

On a related note...my 53 R-131 has vacuum wipers and a 6 volt system...I'd like to upgrade to an electric motor and use the original switch, but am having trouble finding a compatible electric motor...anyone have any info?.

See my comment above in the thread, Newport engineering has a motor that will bolt to you vacuum set up, a voltage conversion unit, and an adapter that you can use your original switch.

Oh, and you can get new bushings for your links to keep the arms from flopping all over the cowl like mine do!

Re: 6v wipers on a 12v system

Thanks for the tip, especially about the bushings...my wipers usually end up somewhere between the cowl and hood!

Mine occasionally act as mud flaps so a conversion is on the wish list for me.
