Coolant additive

Any one have an opinion about Radiator coolant additive
to protect for corrosion as well as water pump wear.

Have read that some products include advance cooling
properties as well.

The truck system is flushed and clean just wondering
for added protection if I should consider it.

PS- I know Google is my friend but I trust the Mechanics on this board
I certainly don’t need this for any other reason than I am talking
about my truck and taking care of it.. It is part of my family :)
:t3717: Ya maybe a bit !

Re: Coolant additive

I've added a coolant filter to my K and after the initial filter change will be including SCA's at the proper dose to the system. I've pulled apart engine with and without filters and SCA's
SCA's lay down a thin sacrificial layer to prevent cavitation damage. Filter keeps the coolant clean. Of the two on an old IHC that isn't working hard, the filter will give more benefit.
SCA's should be used only in "green" coolant, and not some of the new long life coolants.
Up to you, but don't overdose, and to really see a benefit you need a coolant filter also.
Engines that spent their life with a filter on the coolant look new inside after a million miles, ones that haven't, well we've all seen those.

Re: Coolant additive

Great information as expected ...

I did some research on coolant filters.
Its time for replacement of the water pump
on my Cummings 5.9 and having the information
suggested is very helpful in this regard as well.

Thank you !

All of the hundreds of Cummins Powered vehicles where I worked, had FLEETGUARD coolant treatment filters. These filter work.

Re: Coolant additive

Ford Flathead V8 engines are notorious for boiling coolant. The guy I bought the car from had installed a 7# pressure cap on the open cooling system. For all of the good that didn't do, he might as well have put a 100# cap on the rad.
I had a new radiator built for $978, I installed new water pumps with modern lip seals designed for pressure. The rad cap is 7#. I should not forget the electric fan. All of that blew a big hole in $1500. Did all of this work? I sure hope so. I have not driven the car yet. I have been confined to the house. I am dog sitting again, today.

Re: Coolant additive

The "B" series 5.9 water pump can be changed is less than 20 minutes. Two bolts hold the pump to the block. A "O" ring seals the pump to the block. Take a good look at the serpentine belt with the idea of changing it if it shows polishing, cracking or fraying. Add another 5 minute to this change.
