distributer question

so I just bought this 53 r120 it has , I believe, a SD220 tilt valve engine in it. the couple I got it from got it from her sister when she passed. anyway, he told me he could get it running sometimes. of course not when I went to see it. anyway price was good so I brought it home. we just moved to washington just north of spokane so I haven't had much time to fiddle with it until last night. it wouldn't start, of course. while tinkering around with it, I grabbed the distributer and it moved, like side to side a little. the bolt holding it down was tight. I removed it and it appears to be missing parts. the hold down/advance looks different than the one on my old L110 and the one in the MT97 parts book. It also has a different number on the distributer than the one in the book. what do you think? number on distributer is 1112416 and in MT97 it's 1112355

I have ordered some parts for it like valve cover gasket so I can make sure their adjusted proper, carb kit, wires as they are miss matched, new belt and a fuel pump rebuild kit as there is a electric pump on it now.

at some point i would like to put it to 5 lug and get rid of the 3/4 ton stuff.

That is the newer style distrib, and I believe it will work fine. Also it is a little taller, with the newer advance and clamp. I sold one like that and the guy installed it in his L series 220 engine.

An SD 220 would be straight valve. And the original distributor was the 1112355. The 1112416 would have come on a tilt valve BD or BG, but will work as long as you use the corresponding vacuum advance. Or if you have to, you can make a spacer to go between the top of the old advance and the bottom of the 1112416 distributor. I did that once, and as I recall, I used a piece of copper pipe for the spacer. Looked nice. :)

thanks. that sure like like it. but I'm missing parts 4 and 5 from fig 8-11. in figure 8-10 the part #1 that the distributer goes thru dosen't hold it tight and it wobbles a bit. i would think any bump would move the timing off. and a merry christmas to you!

it is a tilt valve engine. i took off the valve cover to make sure before ordering the gasket. so that means its a bd240?

I hadread that the later SD220s were tilt valve. I will see if I can find the article.

After just doing more reading i may be wrong about the late SD220s. I will let someone with more experience chime in.

I'd look on the pad on the engine to be sure whether it's a BD, or an SD with a BD head. Not sure what that would do with that kind of head swap. I might have the parts you need for the distributor.

thanks paul, I totally forgot about the serial number location, yes it is a BD240. if you have the parts missing from my distributer and would sell them to me, I would be very grateful!

Here are the parts diagrams and numbers for the 1112416. The vacuum advance and hold down are a little more flimsy than those for the earlier 1112355, but seem to work. Let me know which pieces you're missing. I'll be gone for about 10 days, but checking in.
