Finally, a trailer to go with my R

I bought a converted L frame/bed trailer a few yrs ago from an estate sale. The frame and bed are “L”. The springs (leafs anyway) are “L”. The straight axle is ford. The added coil springs are anybodies guess. After I got it back to the shop I added a new hitch to it, proper chains, a tongue jack, and fresh rubber. The trailer sat since.

A ditch witch trailer came into my life a handful
Of months ago. I’ve wanted to harvest the ford straight axle from the L trailer for a possible shop project. I liked the low deck height of the ditch witch trailer so I decided to set the L bed on a “proper” trailer frame. I ended up narrowing the frame 7” and above replaced the surge brake backing plates with 10”x2-1/4” electric brakes. The trailer is a tilt deck and with the nose up the entry height of the trailer is about 5”. I love how it has turned out so far. I’ve installed 3/4” LED running lights and 11mm LED back-up lights on the trailer. I still have to replace the hitch to remove surge brake master and all of the associated bulk and fit a proper tongue jack. Projects for a future day.

The trailer pulls great. Looks pretty good too in my opinion.

Cool! There was a, IH truck bed trailer on ebay a few weeks ago I would have loved to been able to pick up but it was on the opposite side of the country :t0174:

Great looking set up! Is that a custom rear bumper on your truck, or did it come off of another rig?

Re: Finally, a trailer to go with my R

The bumper came on my truck when I bought it. The general consensus (as far as I’m aware) is that if the rear bumper doesn’t look like a front bumper it was likely handmade or aftermarket. I’d imagine mine was aftermarket just based on the number of tag rivets that remain the on bumper. All of the tags are long gone, but the tags are still hanging in (proud of the bumper surface). Can’t imagine a homemade job having tags placed all over it… maybe not…
