WHat is the deal with the "shark fin" on the roof? What is that used for?

And the rear window....what the hec? Did they try to poorly section in a split window?

The periscope in the roof was the line up the boom with the load. The truck was a winch truck with a boom. Note the high mounted PTO and Clutch levers on the dash.
Once the truck was in position, the operator turned around in the seat and could watch the lift while useing the levers by feel. Note the sliding rear window on the drivers side.
My Dart oil field rig truck is set up (or was, much is now missing) similar. the rear window slid down behind the seat and the clutch pedal was lengthened so it could be operated by someone backwards in the drivers seat. On mine the winch free-wheel and brake were air controlled on the back wall of the cab between the seats.
