what year engine?

I have a 1942 K5 but it has a BD240 engine. I am trying to find what year and perhaps model this engine could be so I may look for parts like gaskets, water pump etc

stamped BD240
70880 maybe a 1 at end of 70880 but i think its just "stuff"

casting number 79129R1

Thanks

Re: what year engine?

Not a lot to go on there. The casting number looks like a casting number for the exhaust manifold. That doesn't help at all. What's the casting number from the crankcase, on the driver's side, back in the area around the triple diamond or "IH" casting? Does the valve cover have a raised ridge running from front to back in the center, or only the raised ridges running side to side? Pictures would help. In general terms, and with IH there are always fudges and exceptions, the BD series seems to be from the S series in "56, through about 1961 or 1962, followed by the same basic engine, renamed BG.

Re: what year engine?

For gaskets, all you really need to know is if it is a tilt valve or a straight valve engine. The width of the valve cover will tell that.

^^^yup^^^
there are no date codes for IHC motors, they have a serial number, but there is no database for motor serial numbers,

you do not need to know the year, just the model and whether straight or tilt valve for parts,

Re: what year engine?

IHC gasoline engines have a date code cast into the rear area of the block.
The year of the casting is annotated by a letter.
A list of the letters and years follows.

IHC Gas Engine Casting Year Codes:

A = 1931 + 1955 + 1977
B = 1932 + 1956 + 1978
C = 1933 + 1957 + 1979
D = 1934 + 1958 + 1980
E = 1935 + 1959 + 1981
F = 1936 + 1960 + 1982
G = 1937 + 1961 + 1983 + 1984
H = 1938 + 1962 + 1985
I = 1939
J = 1940 + 1963
K = 1941 + 1964
L = 1942 + 1965
M = 1943 + 1966
N = 1944 + 1967
O = 1945
P = 1946 + 1968
Q = 1947
R = 1948 + 1969

good to know, I guess I should have stated serial number stamped on motor doesn't have a date code,

Read the post again, I did not say the date code was with the engine serial number.

I didn't mean to imply you did, I stated there were no date codes, you let me know cast numbers are date code,
I tried to clarify that I should've said the stamped numbers do not have a date code, but cast numbers do.

I was attempting to agree with you.
