R112 Brake Adjustment

So I have a KB Truck Service manual but not one for the R112. I found an R series manual online but it is for the larger R series trucks. I have a real simple question. Is the only adjustment for the brakes on the R112 just the lower sprocket adjuster? There is a large nut on the top of the backing plate but it just seems like it holds the top round pivot point and does not have sort of adjustment.

Thank You!

Mike

Re: R112 Brake Adjustment

That stud can be moved up or down to adjust the effective center of the brake shoe “circle”. May be required if either the top or the bottom of the shoes drags. The star wheel adjusts the effective diameter of the brake shoe “circle”, or how tight it is against the drum. Ideally the shoes should make perfectly even contact, but rarely do without fitting them. I doubt most brake shops even know there used to be a special grinder just for that task.

Re: R112 Brake Adjustment

Thanks for the info on the upper stud. I know that the KB's similar style Nut off to the side on the backing plate and you can adjust the eccentric for the upper part of the shoe. I was just wondering if the upper nut on the R series actually did anything. I think that for as much as the truck will be driven that they are likely fine as they are and then just adjust the bottom adjuster.

On another note I took picture of the front and rear brakes before I took them apart and on the front the shorter show was towards the front of the truck but on the back the short shoe was towards the rear of the truck. After doing some research everyone is saying that the shorter show should always be towards the front. Is that correct?

Thanks for the help.

Re: R112 Brake Adjustment

You CAN buy the self-adjuster hardware for the mid-'60's 110/1100 series with the 12 x 1-3/4" shoes and turn those into self-adjusting brakes...

Rock Auto shows Raybestos H2538 for the left side kit, and H2539 for the right side kit. Look under '65 D1100.

Re: R112 Brake Adjustment

I figured it out when doing the brakes on my '52 L-110, right after doing the brakes on my '66 1100.

It was a "Well...DUH!" moment.

Re: R112 Brake Adjustment

I put self adjusters on my 53 R110. Works well. My truck is a daily driver and I rarely need to do anything with the adjustment.
